Sew Your Own Halloween Costume
The very first costume I shared on Decor To Adore was an 18th-century dress sewn for under $30 way back in 2013. When I look at this costume today, I cringe a bit. But then I refocus on how far I have come in costume research and sewing!
There is also an 18th Century Gentleman’s Costume made for under $6.00.
Becoming Jane
A few years went by before I created A Regency Costume for Under $10. Again, with this costume, I try to focus on how much my sewing has progressed. But it was pretty good for a beginner.
Harriet
Another Regency costume I created a few years later was Harriet based on the 2020 film, Emma.
LaDocia Ingalls
In 2016, The Dance at Grandpa’s costumes were based on a story from Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Caroline Ingalls
Sticking with the Little House theme this post shares how to create Caroline’s everyday pioneer look.
Nellie Oleson
This lovely silk polonaisse dress inspired by Nellie Oleson remains a favorite.
Queen Victoria
I love the fashions worn by Queen Victoria in the 1830s and 1840s.
18th c. Provencal Gal
After a trip to the Provence region of France I was inspired to create a 18th c. Provencal Gal in 2018.
Outlander
I have read the entire Outlander book series and am also a devoted watcher of the television series. I was inspired to create this Georgian era gown complete with the Gunn tartan sash.
Plucking The Turkey
The famous painting, Plucking The Turkey by Henry Walton, 1776 was recreated with Grace the doxie serving as the poultry model.
Marie Antoinette
In her later years, Marie Antoinette favored wearing a simpler dress style known as the Chemise a la Reine.
Suffragette Fashions
The women’s right to vote celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020. You can see early suffragette fashion in this post.

As well as a Suffragette look inspired by the year 1920.
Edwardian Sporting Fashion
One of my all time favorite looks is an 1890’s Victorian Sporting Outfit. The sleeves are just ridiculous!
Downton Abbey
Loving all the fashions featured in the beloved PBS drama led to creating a Downton Abbey inspired frock.
The Great Gatsby
In 2017 both an daytime and evening look was made based on The Great Gatsby novel and films.

1940s Nurse
One of my all time favorite costumes was a 1940s Nurse that was based on a uniform worn by my Grandma Ingalls.
A 1950’s Housewife Costume
You can easily pull together A 1950’s Housewife Costume from thriftstore finds. But if you’d like to make your own, this post shares the details.
The Queen Bee
In 2020 our son, Sweet Guy began dating his Sweet Gal. Her parents, Mike and Michele, throw an epic Halloween bash every year. So Mr. Decor and I attended in our Victorian Fancy Dress costumes.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates of the Caribbean was the theme for 2021.
Sweet Guy went as Will Turner.
Channeling other epic 18th century Disney characters we attended as Provincial Belle And Gaston.
This was my favorite photo shoot. Mr. Decor’s FACE! LOL.
In 2022 the Scoma family selected Ghostbusters for their annual Halloween party theme.
Since no one is admitted to the party without a costume I created the infamous Sigourney Weaver character known as The Gatekeeper aka Dana Zuul.
This required The Gatekeeper’s sidekick, The Keymaster aka Louis Tully.
Star Wars Costume Extravaganza
Once again the Scoma family outdid themselves with a Star Wars Costume Extravaganza.

Mr. Decor went as Obi Wan Kenobi while I was a generic Jedi.
Last year the annual Scoma bash Halloween theme was Scooby Doo.
Mr. Decor and I went as the often seen Scarecrow Villains.
You can find dozens more costume ideas under the FASHION tab at the top of the Decor To Adore website.
They include the Red Coral Sea Hag.
As well as the a historically accurate depiction of Martha Ingalls Allen Carrier. Sadly, she was tried and convicted as a witch in 1692 Salem.
This past Friday, on Instagram, I sadly announced that there would be no annual costume reveal this year. My son’s upcoming wedding, set to take place in just 3 short weeks, has consumed all of my time and attention. I hope this post of my many past makes has inspired you to create your own Halloween costume.
Laura

Beautiful costumes Laura…and you look great in them as does Mr. Decor. You are so talented and inspiring to those wishing to make a costume. I believe my costume days are over as it is now my turn to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the season. Enjoy the upcoming wedding and have a very great and Blessed week.
The very first time I discovered your blog, you had posted the first of your 18th century costumes. Aha! A kindred spirit! I don’t know how many years ago that was, but I have been a fan ever since.
I know that my costumes would be far more simple! (Probably held together with velcro or duct tape!) But boy, do I ever love looking at yours. They amaze me!
