Today I am no longer the mother of a teenager. Sweet Guy is turning 20. He truly is A Pirate To Steal Your Heart.
A Pirate To Steal Your Heart
Back in 2008 when I first began blogging Sweet Boy’s 7th birthday party was featured. It seems quite fitting that it was a Pirate Party.
Early last January Sweet Guy mentioned that he and his girlfriend, Megan, were planning an elaborate Halloween costume party with her family. It would feature an array of characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Megan was to be Elizabeth Swann and Ian would portray Will Turner as featured in the 2003 film Curse of the Black Pearl.
Will Turner
While I had seen the film in the theater, that was over 18 years ago. (Seems hard to believe.) But luckily I was able to easily watch it again on Disney Plus.
I also studied every movie still photograph I could find. Thank you, Pinterest.
Then it was time to seek out a pattern to use for the 18th century-inspired vest, shirt, and breeches.
Simplicity 4923 fit the bill pretty well for the vest and shirt. Although I did eliminate the ruffles on the sleeves.
A good breeches pattern is by Eagles View Patterns.
The shirt went together easily. I used historically accurate linen. There is a single button and thread loop to close the collar as well as a single button closure on each of the cuffs. I used Dorset buttons found on Etsy.
Just Keep Stitching
Then it was time to make the vest. I had a lovely brown linen and cotton blend fabric that I had gotten for free at an upholstery shop clean out a few years ago. But it was missing a crucial element.
Embellished stitching.
Now some people wouldn’t bother. But I think you all know me.
A disappearing fabric marker helped keep me straight. The stitching was created with DMC cotton embroidery thread which worked very well. Each vest front took 6-7 hours. There were two of course. I can only say, I love my son.
To get the rest of his look right I must have watched this sword fight scene 20 times.
I purchased brown silk ribbon to tie back his hair and tan cotton stockings from Penny River. I cannot say enough nice things about Jessica’s wonderful shop. I’m still hoping to get one of her dachshund-themed thread winders!
The shoes and belt came from eBay.
The sword selected has a sapphire on top of the cutlass handle. It is the birthstone of September.
Love is always in the details.
The back of the vest is plain linen. It was customary in the 18th century to have an embellished fabric in the front and a less expensive fabric in the back.
Locks Of Love
My young man is a guy with a pirate’s smile and a poet’s heart. His girlfriend requested that he try to grow his hair out. Grow it he did.
He continues to grow out his hair with the intention of eventually donating it to Locks of Love. It’s a cause near and dear to his heart. His girlfriend’s older sister, Madison, who appears in our Christmas video, has alopecia.
Argh!
I asked him to give me his most menacing swashbuckling looks.
This guy. My Sweet Guy. A true thief of hearts.
You’ll want to come back tomorrow to see six more Pirates of the Caribbean themed costumes. Including Will Turner’s sweetheart.

Wow! Happy 20th Birthday Sweet Guy! (Sorry, but always Sweet Guy to me! lol) We have watched SG and his sister, the sweet Fashionista grow into amazing, kind and mature adults with caring hearts. It takes wonderful parents to accomplish that feat. <3
Love the details on the vest and accessories. Hopefully the party isn't the only time it will be used. And I am thinking they have already won the best costume prize! 😉
Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful costume and endearing stories of your family!

Your time, attention to detail, and loving determination are so evident in every stitch, Laura! Surely a movie producer will see this and the offers will start rolling in! Ian looks so handsome with a character to match. You should be a proud Mama! Happy birthday Sweet Guy!

Oh, he’s so menacing and piratical! It’s fabulous — and I’ll bet they’ll be the only ones with antique fabrics and embellishments, too — and perfectly historically accurate! What a fun idea for a party and oh, are they ever lucky to have you in their corner. And you — amazing woman you are! He’s so handsome — I like the long hair look!
