Pirates Of The Caribbean Costume Extravaganza
You might want to grab yourself a refreshing mug of ale then sit back for this very detailed post. It features the following characters and how their costumes were created by my friend Michele of @posingpretty
- Captain Barbosa
- Captain Salazar
- Jack Sparrow
- Jack The Monkey
- Syrena the Mermaid
- Angelica Teach
- Elizabeth Swann
- Will Turner this costume was made by me and featured HERE.
Captain Barbossa
Captain Barbossa is played by Geoffrey Rush in several of the Pirate films.
Barbossa’s jacket was created from Simplicity 4923. The sleeves were altered by opening up the top sleeve and tacking it in the middle and coming together again at the cuff.
The jacket fabric was found at Hobby Lobby. The texture was similar to the original jacket making it a perfect choice. However, the color was originally a light jade green. It was placed in a black dye bath which resulted in a nice greenish-gray.
All buttons were purchased from Wherehouse Fabrics in Dallas.
All of the men’s shirts in the post were constructed with this pattern. Both views D and E were used.
The double-breasted vest was a Laughing Moon pattern. The front was extended and the upper collar was removed.
Yes, I was in stitches the entire time I was photographing Matt.
Vest fabric was purchased from Best Fabrics in Dallas. The hat was created with Simplicity pattern 8713 View C.
Modifications: Hat was made from Buckram, felted, and covered in ultra suede. Trim and feathers sourced from Joanns and Amazon.
Accessories
You can find all the boots shown in this post HERE.
Weapons: see guns HERE. See swords HERE.
A variety of pants were purchased HERE.
Belt buckles came from HERE and HERE.
All of the belts and bandoliers were created from various vinyl fabrics. This is covered in the video.
Captain Salazar
Captain Salazar was played by Javier Bardem in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Michele’s oldest son, Tony, selected the alive version for his character. It was the most difficult of all of the costumes to make. The coat was created with McCall’s 7585.
The pleats at the bottom of the coat were made lower on the sides and back to match the inspiration photo. A mandarin collar was added to the neck. The cuffs were redrafted to match the original. Michele spent about a week stitching all the ribbon and trim to match the inspiration photos. The jacket has about 60 buttons!
The buttons and black fabric from Wherehouse Fabric in Dallas. Ribbons and trim from Hobby Lobby.
Epaulets were self-drafted and trimmed with silver bullion fringe.
Metals were 3-D printed and painted silver.
The waistcoat was made from the same pattern. The collar was opened up and folded over to a pointed lapel. The ribbon was stitched to create the buttonholes. The pockets were left off.
Jack Sparrow
Jack Sparrow is portrayed by Johnny Depp in all of the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies released so far.
This iconic character required tremendous study. It was worn by Michele’s husband, Mike.
The wig was constructed after watching a Wig Tutorial by Alyson Tabbitha. Her instructions were closely followed. Making the dreads is a mess but the results are great.
An old pirate wig in bad shape was used. The long bone featured on the wig was created with Sculpey clay and painted to look like a bone. Beads and beads and charms found at Hobby Lobby were added to the wig.
Alyson Tabitha also has a Jack costume guide that was helpful.
Simplicity pattern 4923 was again used with views C, E, and F.
The dried chicken leg came from Etsy.
Jack The Monkey
Hansa Capuchin Monkey plush can be found HERE.
Jack the monkey’s costume was self-drafted using an American doll pattern as a starting point. However, it was mainly self- drafted.
Syrena the Mermaid
Syrena the Mermaid was played by French-Spanish actress Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Michele thought that this would be the easiest costume to create. But the first version ended up in the trash. She began with Ya Ya Hans Mermaid pattern McCalls 7825.
The pattern features a one-piece costume, bodice, and tail connected with a zipper opening in the back so the wearer can walk. Michele quickly realized in the first version that the pattern was way too long for her petite 5-foot-tall daughter. She cut the pattern at the waist and shortened the tail/skirt by about 5 inches
A flesh-colored bodysuit with mesh sleeves was created with this pattern. As the mermaids from the movie were dangerous the overall look was more classic than Disney Princess. A ruffle was added to the side fins, back fin, and tail fin as the pattern calls.
An additional ruffle was made into a modified belt to hide the waistband. Fishnet was draped over the bodice. Shells and yarn resembling seaweed were glued on.
Madison has alopecia (hair loss) so she wore a wig that had additional shells and seaweed applied to it.
Spandex for tail and bodysuit was purchased HERE.
Angelica Teach
Angelica Teach was played by Penelope Cruz in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
The first challenge was finding a close match to the paisley fabric used for Angelica’s vest.
A replica was found on Spoonflower but it was not available for order. A close match was found and the vest was self-drafted.
The blouse was made using Butterick 6114. The dress was shortened to a long blouse length. It was also modified with a drawstring closure instead of elastic at the underbust as well as drawstrings around the wrist instead of the upper arm.
The waist corset was made from heavy-weight linen. It laces up in the back and has gold trim on the front.
The cross necklace and beads that make up the feather earring came from Hobby Lobby.
Elizabeth Swann
Elizabeth Swann was portrayed by Kiera Knightley in four of the Pirates movies. You can find pictures of the original gown HERE.
The dress was created with Simplicity 4092. The fabric was found at Best Fabrics in Dallas and lace came from JoAnns.
Modifications to the pattern: the underskirt was made using a separate casing on the front and one for the back. A drawstring is used to tie around the front and the back to secure. Paniers were made using this pattern too.
The center-back zipper was eliminated on the dress. It snaps together on the right side of the stomacher.
The stomacher features machine embroidery. The pattern is from Etsy. It was hand-beaded with pearls and seed beads.
The white and gold fly trim (also search for Rococo trim) was purchased from Etsy.
The hat was self-drafted. The base was made from buckram and covered in silk taffeta and lace.
The fan was found on Amazon.

You have got to be kidding me. You did the WHOLE PARTY? I am stunned, amazed, awed, wowed and I’m being understated here! These are all fabulous, Laura. And they all look so great in them — like they belong! I can’t believe this one — you must have been burning the midnight oil for days. I knew you did your son’s and thought probably his girlfriend but the whole nine yards? Oh, you should be mother of the year!

Hello friends!
I know this was a super long and detailed post. So much information to read! But it is Michele that is credited a few times in creating the fabulous costumes for her family. Yesterday’s video had her talking about their construction in depth. She is truly amazing!
I only created the Will Turner costume for Ian.
