Halloween Costume Looks For Less

Hello sweet friends!  I grew up creating my own festive trick or treats looks. I can’t ever really remember having a store-bought costume. How about you? Today is a collection of ideas to make Halloween Costume Looks For Less.

I think the least expensive costume I created in recent years is also a fan favorite. Becoming Jane was made for under $10. A tablecloth and sheet were transformed with a bit of Rit dye. You can also find empire waist dresses at the thrift store. I shared how to make the bonnet HERE.

Harriet

Harriet was a key character in the 2020 film Emma. I found most of the fabric at an estate sale. You can recreate this look with a white dress and gold vest. If you are handy with a needle a sheet could be transformed too.

An Outlander Dress

A plaid scarf, ruffled blouse, and full skirt can be found at a thrift store. I made my Outlander Dress from thrift store fabric.

I Adore Cottage Core

Cottage Core is a hot look right now. But it’s been worn by working women for centuries. So grab yourself a headscarf, apron, and long dress for true treats.

Suffragette Fashions

Both looks shown in the Suffragette Fashions post can easily be recreated from thrift store finds. Directions for the sash are HERE.

Marie Antoinette

In her later years, Marie Antoinette popularized the wearing of the Chemise a la Reine. This dress can be made in just a few hours from a simple sheet or put together with a white dress, sash, and hat from the thrift store.

Anne With An E

Anne of Green Gables adored puffed sleeves and I do too. This Victorian Sporting Ensemble went together beautifully but you can recreate the look with thrift store finds.

Titanic or Downton Abbey

Another era of empire waist fashion can easily be sourced at the thrift store. If you have time for a stitch this mulberry dress was made from various scraps.

The Great Gatsby

The Roaring 20’s is also an easy-to-source costume. But the simple one-hour dresses of the time period are also perfect for a beginning sewist.

The 1950s Housewife

I wear vintage-inspired dresses in my everyday life. Such dresses can be easily obtained. Add an apron and other props you’re ready to go.

The Vintage Nurse

As a tribute to my grandmother, I made a circa 1940s Nurse Ensemble. This look can also be easily put together with a few key accessories.

I Love Laura

It’s no secret that I adore Laura. Over the years I made several ensembles as a nod to Little House. The Caroline Ingalls Costume can easily be recreated from thrift store finds. Aprons and bonnets are also great beginner projects.

Nellie Oleson

Creating iconic clothing can be a daunting task. Creating Nellie’s silk polonaise took MONTHS of work. But it is still probably the creation I am most proud of. Don’t be afraid to dream and work on your skills so that someday you to can create your favorite look.

Queen Victoria

This look inspired by a regal monarch also took a bit of time. But it can be recreated with a recycled full-skirted prom dress, tiara, and ribbon sash.

Believe it or not, these 14 designs are only a small portion of the clothing I have made over the years. For additional inspiration please check out the FASHIONS page.

Next Friday is the reveal for this year’s Halloween Extravaganza!

You beautiful creations may be made with a thrifty plan but they are all too pretty and detailed in my mind to ever be thought of as Halloween costumes. I love the way you research and share your knowledge with each one. You add so many lovely and often subtle details that would be unseen to the untrained eye.
What a lovely collection on this post. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

I’m so amazed by your skill; you see an inspiration look and then make it to perfection. You should be a costume consultant on television and movie projects. What talent!!!
