Hello sweet friends! ! Welcome to the June edition of the Pinterest Challenge. This monthly event is hosted by the fabulous Cindy of County Road 407. If you are coming over from DIY Beautify let me say, “Welcome to Storybook Cottage”. I was so inspired by Cindy’s vintage dish and flag décor. Today’s post here on DTA features White Lace and Linen Flags.
Patriotic Pizzazz
This month the challenge was to create a patriotic inspired post. As I retired military wife I didn’t need to be asked twice to join in!
Our inspiration image was this lovely grouping of flags by Liz Marie.
Over the years I have created numerous posts celebrating our beautiful country and the freedom we enjoy.
They have included 10 minute door decor.
Patriotic patios as well as a vintage inspired flag made from scraps.
Last week I shared a patriotic pennant made from scraps.
Many of you commented on the three flags nestled in the milk bottles. I had made those for a post way back in 2012! But I see that such flags are now making the rounds again in decor posts.
I thought perhaps it might be fun to update an old favorite.
White Lace and Linen Flags
Right now my summer decor palette includes soft greens, creams and white. Red, white and blue accents don’t exactly fit in.
Recently while I was organizing my sewing scraps I noticed that I had several small scraps of white and cream fabric. As well as numerous bits of antique lace not big enough for much of anything.
But they were all the perfect size for white lace and linen flags.
You Will Need
Assorted scraps of fabric and lace in shades of cream, white and ivory.
- Scissors
- Thread or fabric glue
- Mini wooden dowels
Shop The Post
I made two different sized flags.
You will need a fabric rectangle measuring 4 1/2″ by 7″ for the small size. Or 6″ x 9″ for the larger sized flag.
Then lay out scraps of lace trims, cut to various lengths, to resemble the design of the American flag.
From here you have two options: stitch or glue the scraps of lace to the fabric.
I opted to sew my lace to the fabric with a sewing machine. You could also tack them on by hand.
I then sewed a small channel on one end which I then slid a wooden dowel into (12″ long).
You can also attach the end of the flag to the dowel using glue.
Let freedom ring, you’re done!
I couldn’t resist making several and placing them in a vase on my desk.
I plan to pass them out to friends and neighbors who visit Storybook Cottage in the next few weeks.
My handsome veteran doesn’t always notice new vignettes in the home. But he mentioned how much he liked the flags twice so I also placed a small grouping in a favorite reading area.
Up next is A Stroll Thru Life. You will love Miss Marty’s post on Flag Day!

Your lace and linen flags are amazing. I am constantly in awe at how you can take such tiny bits of fabric and trim and create such fabulous things. These flags are perfect. I really do love the kitchen window treatment too. It is perfect.

Adorable, Laura!!! I love the idea of using up scraps of fabric and lace. I have a ton of pieces of dropcloth material and laces. This would be fun to use in my current vignette for the rest of summer! Thank you for the tutorial and idea. Perfect for a quiet patriotic theme!!!!
Happy 4th to you and Mr. Decor,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂

I wanted to make some of these because they are fantastic and perfect for so many things. Actually went to the fabric store. But because the ribbon wasn’t on sale, I left. Sadly. Hope it’s on sale next week! Glad you could join us. I know your summer is busy! pinned

I think I need to do some digging through my lace and vintage doilies to see what I can come up with. Thanks for the inspiration Laura, your flags are exceptionally pretty!

There are lovely. Do you need more lace trims? Happy to include them in your box — let me know. Some are crocheted lace, others lacy, others doilies (which I know you used on your apron to good effect!) I don’t want you to fun out!
