A Patriotic Pennant From Fabric Scraps

Hello sweet friends. Recently, my leftover fabric from previous projects has begun to overflow the baskets that I have to hold it. When this happens I know that it’s time to create some scrap busting projects. Today’s post features A Patriotic Pennant From Fabric Scraps.

Supplies

The great thing about this project is that it is quick, easy and very low cost. You will need:

  • Scrap fabric
  • Scissors
  • Twine, ribbon or bias tape
  • Pennant Pattern

You may also need sewing pins, a seam ripper, craft or hot glue.

For the pennant shown I used a full size pattern image printed out on an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper.

Quick No Sew Method

Next, you’ll need to decide how you want to construct your pennant.

The fastest way to make a pennant is to cut out several fabric pieces with pinking shears and simply hot glue them on to some twine or ribbon.

Double Sided Pennant

I wanted to make a double sided pennant that would look great no matter where it was hung.

To create this style of pennant you will need to cut two pieces from each fabric print. I doubled the pieces as I wanted an extra long banner.

Begin by pinning the two fabric pieces right sides together. Then sew a half inch seam on each long side of the triangle pivoting at the point.

The top short edge was left unsewn so that the triangle could be flipped inside out.

To get a sharp end point snip a bit of the excess fabric away from the seam allowance at the tip.

Step one

Once the piece is turned inside out you can take a seam ripper, knitting needle or something similar to create a sharp point by pulling the fabric gently out at the end. Sometimes pushing it out from the inside works too. The key is to be slow and gentle.

You can press the pennant flat with a warm iron for an even crisper finish.

Step 2

Once you have sewn all of your pennant flags you will then pin the tops to the edge of seam binding. Stitch as close as you can to the edge.

Flip the seam binding over to the back of the pennants and stitch again. This results in the pennant flags being securely sandwiched between the seam binding.

You can then give any area a bit of patriotic pizazz. The pennants look great hung on mantels, shelves, hutches, doorways, and more.

I wanted a bit more color at my kitchen window. It just needed a single command strip applied in each corner to hang up the pennant.

No doubt you’ll see this banner used a number of ways in the coming days and years.

The beauty of this version is that it is also completely machine washable so can be hung outdoors too.

Love your 4th of July pennants! Did you also make the sweet flags in your windowsill? They are precious.
    Much love,

I like this and will make a banner. Thank you for the template. Using pinking shears would certainly remove a lot of the time. I didn’t think of that. I never told you that I showed my neighbor the flag last year and she made it! It turned out wonderful and she had it on the side of my old-fashioned garage, but we decided to take it down and put it on her covered porch as it was facing east and it began to fade. My camera is broken or I would have sent a photo.

Thank you for the banner pattern. I just went to Hobby Lobby to get some fabric, since my scrap supply is low! 40% off this week! Can’t wait to get started!

Sew, sew cute! And your seam ripper has a very beautiful handle. Is it an antique or did someone craft it?

So cheery and festive, Laura. I think I’d probably go the glue method!
