I’ve got 3 weeks to complete A $100 Bathroom Makeover! Late to the party, I am joining in on the $100 Room Challenge. The concept is simple. Complete a room makeover with $100 or less by using DIY projects and/or other cost-saving strategies.
A $100 Bathroom Makeover
A few weeks ago I made a quick trip to Nashville. My daughter moved into a home and asked if I could bring the rest of her things. This included the shower curtain and all the accessories I used in the bathroom makeover I did for her four years ago.
So now I am left with a blank whitish box.
I say whitish because remember the Pinterest fail I had in trying to add a tropical palm tree design on the walls?
Even though I painted over the palm fronds the acrylic paint is bleeding through.
Random nails/holes are in the wall. There is also missing hardware.
No, the cast iron tub isn’t dirty, it needs refinishing. But we don’t have the budget right now.
The mirror. UGH.
It’s permanently affixed to the wall. But something needs to be done to make it look better.
To-Do List
- Give all surfaces a thorough cleaning
- Remove nails, fill wall holes.
- Paint the room.
- Replace missing hardware.
- Frame out the mirror.
- Storage
- Source artwork.
- Accessorize – shower curtain, rings, rug, soap holder, etc.
Luckily, I have almost a full gallon of white paint that we didn’t use during our other recent bathroom remodel.
They still sell the same hardware at Hobby Lobby.
The mirror cannot be removed. That is nothing short of replacing the drywall. Which is not an option. A solution to hide the imperfections and update it will be to frame it out using scrap lumber and Mr. Decor’s mad woodworking skills.
Storage
Wall storage? Shelves? A small table?
I might need to dig around in the attic.
I think I might have something like this:
The Artwork
This is where the budget could be blown. Or not.
I currently have three art prints that I love sitting in the closet.
A larger 11″ x 14″ Impressionist print.
Spring (Jeanne Demarsy) by Édouard Manet, 1881
Two smaller 5″ x 7″ prints Impressionism/Realism
The Postman by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889
Girl in Green Turban by William James Glackens, 1913
Do they work together?
Do they work in a bathroom?
I think, “Yes.” What say you?
They would need mats and frames. $$$$$
Accessories
If the art is a YES then what direction do I go in for a shower curtain? Floral? Plain? Bold or quiet color?
How long do I have to decide AND finish?
One week.
Oy!

Hmmm, good question whether or not to go bold . I’m so chicken. And after the bright , and I mean BRIGHT kitchen paint color, I go neutral and safe. Gotta get better at making decisions for myself. I can make lots of decisions for anyone else but me. I think it’s because they aren’t married to a husband that says if it ain’t broke or falling off the wall it’s good. Ugh. Looking forward to seeing the end result. After your last bathroom redo, I know it will look aaaahhhmazing!

I am loving the artwork idea- I would go neutral with the shower to keep the focus on that amazing art!! But of course- you can’t go wrong!!
Cris says
If anyone can do it, You can! I love the art work .

I love the art!! It is perfect for your bathroom. I am not sure what I would do about the shower curtain. I wish I was more help but I am sure what you choose will be perfect.

You have such a wonderful blank canvas to work with. I think the art is such a personal choice. If you love it and you want it in the bathroom… go for it! If you’re not so sure, then there are SO many budget friendly options out there for great art that I’m sure can work in here. I wanted to let you know that I also added you to the $100 Room Challenge Facebook group so you can get updates… hope that’s okay 🙂

Glad you’re joining us in the challenge! You can totally get all that done before the end of the challenge – depending on how much free time you have 😉 Can’t wait to see it all come together.

The art work is AMAZING. I would do whatever it takes to allow it to shine. Am looking forward to seeing what you do. I’m sure it will be great.

I would go neutral to let the art shine! Maybe a few fun pops of color in little accessories that pull from the colors in the paintings? You can do it, and it will be amazing!

The artwork is amazing! Since they are common sizes, you could find thrift store frames and paint them gold to coordinate with the cabinet hardware, I wouldn’t do mats personally. Pretty sure most fine art in museums isn’t matted, and I think it looks better that way. I would keep the shower curtain simple and pull colors from the artwork for towels and accessories. Good luck!

Looking forward to seeing the final reveal for your space! That’s great that Mr. Decor has woodworking skills! I don’t, but last spring I found a way to frame out my bathroom mirror with decorative molding and square wood rosettes.

Oh, this is fun. I have that same ugly mirror. I hope you show details of how it was framed. That’s not my strong suit (nor Rick’s) but I might have to try!
I love the art. Do you have old frames you can repurpose? Or, if you’re looking for savings, would a canvas print of something you love (unframed because it would be wrapped) be less expensive?
That’s quite the challenge! Can’t wait to see the end game!
