Homespun Holiday Prairie Wonderland Ornaments
Each year I create an entirely new holiday decorating theme to deck the halls of Storybook Cottage. This year’s theme of Prairie Wonderland is in celebration of the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Little House on the Prairie television show. Last week I had shared our Christmas tree in this post.
The sled inspired tree box was created by Mr. Decor. It was a nod to the story of my Great-Great-Great grandfather, Lansford Whiting Ingalls naughtily sledding down the hill on a Sunday and scooping up a pig in Little House in the Big Woods. The box is filled with hay in memory of the Ingalls family surviving blizzard after blizzard by twisting and burning hay in The Long Winter.
The tree was decorated with 20 handcrafted Whirl of Gaiety ornaments that feature various Little House images from the stories written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Whirl of Gaiety Ornaments
Most of the ornaments were given to the some of the actors of the show during a recent celebration gathering.
You can find winter themed Little House images on sites such as google and Pinterest.
How To Make The Ornaments
If you are a visual learner I also demonstrate step by step how to make the ornaments in today’s video.
Gather the follow supplies:
- 3 book pages (I used a damage book, missing its cover, that I found at the thrift store).
- 1 small paper doily
- 1 printed image (Recycled holiday cards work well too!)
- Glitter glue
- 1 small scrap of ribbon or lace
- Small decorative element (I used a wood snowflake but buttons or other things work too).
- Craft or hot glue
- Optional: various paper punches and/decorative scissors
Step one: cut or punch out your selected images. Add glitter glue accents and let dry.
Step two is actually optional. To create a pretty edge use a pair of decorative scissors or paper punch. This is only needed on the long side book page edges.
3. Fold the paper evenly, accordion style.
4. Fold your accordion pages in half then glue the center edges together on two of the pages.
5. On the remaining accordion book page you will want to also add a ribbon or lace loop. This will serve as the ornament hanger. Glue the three sections together at the sides to form a circle shape.
6. On the back of the ornament add a decorative element.
7. On the front of the ornament glue on the doily.
Final step: add the decorative image.
The Finished Ornament
The finished ornament is a perfect present topper, or add several onto a length of twine to create a garland.
I love how they look like pretty snowflakes on the tree!
Next to this ornament I added a sleigh bell.
A wee sled from the Target dollar spot jauntily hangs next to Grandpa and the pig.
Today’s Video
In addition to creating the craft there is a Little House Christmas story and more in today’s video.
