Make A Mid Century Holiday Hat

Hello sweet friends! Today I am taking a quick detour from A Little Women Holiday to share how to Make A Mid Century Holiday Hat.

Fun Inspiration

In the 1940s, 50s and 60s, Christmas tree hats and bonnets were widely used as Christmas card images, in marketing, Hollywood publicity shots and more.

Many people jumped on the bandwagon and created their own dazzling head décor.

This weekend I am attending a Mid Century Christmas cocktail party. I’ve made a new 1950s inspired dress and wanted a fun topper to go with it.

To create it just requires a few supplies that can be found at the craft or dollar store.

  • Styrofoam cone
  • Tinsel garland
  • Ribbon
  • Ornaments/embellishments
  • Hot glue gun

Simply hot glue the tinsel to the cone. I began at the bottom.

Then attach whatever ornaments or embellishments that you would like.

I opted to use plastic ornaments as they are lighter. The cardinal topper was selected as it matches the pattern of my dress.

Choose a color and theme that suits you the best. The possibilities are endless.

Finish by hot gluing with a ribbon bow on the bottom.

Ridiculously funny!

I also used a bobby pin on each side of the ribbon to hold it in place.

A better version of wearing a lampshade on one’s head.

Butterick 5556

For the dress I used Retro Butterick pattern 5556 from 1955. Butterick 5556

It went together fairly smoothly.

A new sewist could make it with a bit of assistance on the side zipper installation.

Holiday dress

My friend Michele gave me the cardinal print quilting cotton. The red bows are cotton as well.

I hope this post made you smile!

Have you ever considered making the butterick walk away dress? I know it’s been popular as of late.

Does it stay on when you move (a flat cone — seems like even tied it would slip off one way or the other! What a fun idea!
