Hello sweet friends, I hope you are well and full of joy. Today is a special edition to Fashion Friday. Several of you have been asking for an easy sew along project. Today’s post is for you: Hannah’s Apron A Beginner Sewing Project.
Hannah’s Apron A Beginner Sewing Project
In the novel Little Women Hannah is the March family cook. She is a true treasure having remained with the family even after they lost their fortune. She loves Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy deeply.
In one of the first illustrations of Hannah we see her wearing a half apron in a check print.
In the 1949 film version Hannah (far left) is also shown wearing a similar style.
The Supplies
As an experienced seamstress I can create an apron in about an hour on a sewing machine. It’s about two – three hours if I hand stitch everything. It may take you a bit longer if this is your first sewing project. That is perfectly natural as speed comes with experience. Go easy on yourself.
For an adult sized full-length apron you will need:
- Approximately 2 yards (45 inches wide) of fabric.
- Needle
- Thread
- Scissors
- Sewing machine (optional)
This apron does not require a pattern as you will simply cut or tear rectangular pieces of fabric.
The size of the pieces are proportioned to your individual size.
There is also an option to add a pocket, if desired.
The Tutorial
You can find the step by step tutorial in this week’s video.
The apron was worn recently to the Victorian Candlelight Christmas event at Old City Park in Dallas.
Thank you to my friend Tiffany for the photos.
All The Details
I wore the apron paired with a work dress I created a few years ago. You can find the pattern and details HERE.
The wool sontag is based on an 1860 pattern from Godey’s Lady’s Book. It was made by my friend Lynn’s Lovelies.
I hope you have enjoyed the post.
I’ll be back on Sunday.
