Hello sweet friends! Welcome to a very special edition of Fashion Friday. Today’s post features the popular Paramount television show 1883 Costume and Prop Exhibit.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series 1883, it was created by Taylor Sheridan. It is the prequel to the highly popular show, Yellowstone.

1883 TV Series

The series chronicles James and Margaret Dutton’s perilous journey as they leave Tennessee and travel by train to Fort Worth, Texas. They then join a European immigrant wagon train. Initially, the family is headed to Oregon. But the arduous trek leads them to a new life in Montana.

I promise to give no spoilers!

I do not recommend the show for children under the age of 12. Even then, it should be viewed alongside a parent or other responsible adult.

1883: The Journey West was a wonderful exhibition presented at the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame in Fort Worth.

The display was organized by the museum in partnership with 101 Studios, Visit Fort Worth, and the Fort Worth Film Commission. Visitors were able to view costumes, props, and photography from the show which was filmed in and around Dallas/Fort Worth from July to October of 2021.

The Costumes

The costumes were created by Janie Bryant.

Bryant won an Emmy for her costumes on the HBO series Deadwood. She also created the fabulous 1960s Mad Men fashions.

This is Margaret Dutton’s costume she wears for most of the journey.

The attention to detail in the costumes was superb.

There is a wonderful collection of beadwork from Cathy A. Smith. She is an amazing artist who works to preserve the history of the 19th-century cowboy/cowgirl as well as the Plains Indians. Smith’s work was featured as part of the costuming for the Crow, Comanche, and Lakota tribes in 1883.

 Elsa

I saved my favorite for the last.

The story is narrated by Elsa Dutton, the daughter of James and Margaret. She is played by Isabel May.

Can someone tell me how such narrow velvet trim is applied?

I adore the charming spoon bonnet.

I will say in terms of historical accuracy this high brim spoon bonnet was primarily popular in the 1860s-1870s.

I know I included several photos of this costume but it was with good reason.

One of the immigrant wagon train actresses asked me to commission a dress for her granddaughter who also appeared in the show.

But we’ll save that story for next week.
