Here is Week 1 , Week 2 , Week 3 , Week 4 , and Week 5.
Kitchen Renovation Week 6 Smiling Through Chaos
So technically our renovation began about 8 weeks ago. But I haven’t been able to write some weeks. For anyone considering a large remodeling job they are often advised to add at least 10% to 20% to the remodel time and budget to allow for the unplanned costs and delays that arise. This is excellent advice.
Here at DTA I strive to provide honest accounts of my experiences.
So I would also advise that there may be a situation (or three) where you may have to settle for less than what you had envisioned.
There also may be a moment where you may have a meltdown. (I recommend a private one versus public. Smile.)
During a renovation you may hear bad words. The worst is “Uh oh.”
You really never want to hear that during a renovation.
In this instance the refrigerator measures 70.5 inches tall.
This was exactly the correct height measurement as stated on the specification sheet, as well as the dimensions provided on the website and very much in person.
The cabinet maker built a surround that measured 69 inches tall.
Uh oh indeed.
There was a solution.
It involved settling for something that was not quite my vision.
When you are renovating, the contents of the room that is being redone will probably spill over into other rooms.
Try to cover your furniture to protect it from the thick layer of stuff and dust that will cover every inch of your home.
If your daughter is also moving you may have her couch in the living room along with other random appliances.
But even in the chaos you may sigh with happiness when you walk into the living room with its freshly painted hearth. Your eyes will delight in seeing how the transformation now brightens the entire space in a beautiful way.
Next week I will talk about the appliances.
As I am trying to get ready for a spring home tour there will be no Fashion Friday post.
I’ll be back on Sunday.

Ow wow–how could a cabinet maker miss such a vital measurement? Did you end up having to get a different refrigerator or cut into the wood above?

I need a new fridge and I know that a new fridge will also mean a cabinet cut down or similar. A 60s house and a 21st century fridge aren’t always compatible.
I’m so glad you are nearing the end of it all. It has to be incredibly frustrating and I hope when all is said and done it is truly worth the disruption and the cost. I know it will look terrific.

You will need to go on holiday when your kitchen is finished. Or at least a spa day!

Oh, I feel your pain. And your chaos looks so much more beautiful than mine during my weeks of kitchen renovation. I hope that each uh-oh gets fixed perfectly. Speaking from another uh-oh victim. May your finish be quick and beautiful!

The fireplace came out GORGEOUS!!!! Pure perfection…as will all the rest when done.
You really didn’t say the end result to the refrigerator “Uh oh!!”. The cabinet above cut a bit shorter? A pain but doable.
DEEP breaths and this too shall all pass!!!

The joys of renovations. We are all stary eyed when we look at the magazines and the samples and colour charts. And then, with everything neatly removed from the cabinets and somewhat organized, so we think. We are sure we are all ready. And then the demolition begins and reality soon sets in. Thankfully, if you have a vision and dependable workers, you can still see your vision as the details start to appear. There are many days though when you do start to lose hope of ever serving a cup of tea in your fresh new kitchen or baking a meal as your family gather round. AND it always costs more and takes longer. It should be something that is automatically calculated into the job. Plumbing fittings, repairs no one dreamed were hidden underneath and good ideas that we think of while in the middle of construction that will mean more demolition and cost if not done now. But then comes that day when you can wipe the sawdust out of the cabinets and run water in your new sink and sit down with a cup of tea and admire it. And its more beautiful than you even dreamed! It is worth it. As a person who had a tub sitting in her kitchen while they tore out walls and lived with a temporary sink braced up with 2x4s while we tore out the rest of the kitchen, it is worth it! And once the sawdust settles the designer in you will start to think up other things in other rooms that could use some sprucing up now since the kitchen looks so awesome! Be prepared! 😀
Thank you for sharing all the good times and not so good. It is really going to be so beautiful! <3

I remember when we moved in and our Kitchen was redone. Everything is always such a huge mess, but the outcome will be amazing. Can’t wait to see it all.
