Hello sweet friends! I hope you had a lovely long holiday weekend. I am in full decorating mode here at Storybook Cottage bringing forth our Swinging 60s Christmas theme. This craft is fun for all ages. Indeed I got several of my sweet neighbors involved by asking for their empty tp and paper towel holders. So enjoy this Retro Holiday Decor From Paper Rolls and Tubes. In trying to create a Swinging 60s theme I had searched estate sales and thrift shops for vintage candles. A thought had flickered in my mind and illuminated my child’s heart as I recalled elaborate candle designs that were put out at Christmas time. But alas such candles with their gaudy glow eluded me.
When I was a girl my family often crafted with paper tubes. Here you can see the top of my pigtailed head standing in front of a tree full of wooden soldiers crafted from tp rolls.
Magazines and craft guides in the 60s and 70s were full of similar projects.
An idea began to flicker that I could create an entire mantel of candles!
Let’s Craft!
Collect assorted cardboard tubes, rolls and cartons. I used empty oatmeal and tea canisters, paper towel, gift wrap and toilet paper rolls. Thank you to my sweet neighbors who helped me in this endeavor. They opted to not be named. HA!
- Select scrapbooking paper or cardstock.
- Craft or hot glue
- Embellishments such a lace, gimp, Dresden trim, etc.
- Festive pics and/or pipe cleaners
- Glitter
Cut your decorative paper to size and wrap around the tube. Secure with glue.
Add various embellishments.
For faux flames take sparkly golden hued pics or pipe cleaners and bend into a diamond shape. Secure the ends with glue.
Attach to cardstock circles that are the same diameter of your tube size.

Gather the candles together to really let your light shine!
I made a few dozen bits of sparkle and shine while watching a happy holiday film.
While simple in design they add such a festive gleam.
I had hoped that the brick would have been painted by now but there is a paint shortage along with everything else. This remodel is teaching me patience. Smile.
I hope this craft ignited your creativity and melted your heart.
