Hello sweet friends! Welcome to another historical edition of Fashion Friday. Today we will be looking at Laura Ingalls Inspired Sunbonnets.
Update: my daughter, Alyssabeth Ingalls Sherman, shown below in the photo is currently battling Covid. Your prayers are appreciated!
Laura Ingalls Inspired Sunbonnets
Over the years I have written a few posts that involved the topic of sunbonnets.
A research themed post has oodles of information on bonnets from the 1860s/1870s.
Some of the first bonnets I created can be found in this post.
They were made using the same McCalls pattern M7231 used for last week’s pioneer dress.
It’s a good, basic sewing pattern. A beginner could use it with a bit of assistance.
There are easy ways to make the bonnet more historically accurate. I talk about the details in today’s video.
They also have an adult version of the same pattern, McCalls M7220. I made the Caroline Ingalls Inspired Costume bonnet with this pattern. It just required adding a ruffle to the front brim.
I’ve also made the bonnet from the same pattern I used for the Tasha Tudor Inspired Pioneer Dress. It is not my favorite design. However, it would make a good nightcap.
The bonnet worn by my daughter in the Little House on the Prairie Birthday Party was created with the Butterick B4570 Making History pattern. I will be making the dress from the pattern shortly and will post a review in an upcoming post.
Other Sunbonnet Patterns
There are a few other sunbonnet patterns on the market that I have not yet made. If you have, please let me know in the comments what your experience was!
Simplicity pattern 3723 is still in print and can be found at craft and hobby stores.

I am excited to watch your video. As soon as I saw the pattern for Holly Hobbie, oh my! My Momma made my sister and I matching Holly Hobbie dresses, complete with a pinafore and bonnet! We even when to a portrait studio and had our picture taken together <3. I will continue to pray for your sweet daughter and that the virus does not affect her breathing. Hugs to you my Friend!!

Prayers for your daughter! Will pray for a swift and complete recovery. The bonnets are adorable. When I was a child my mom made bonnets for us to wear outside when we were in the garden. Ours however, did not have ties. I still have hers in my cedar chest.

Cute bonnets! Praying right now for your daughter, that her symptoms will be mild and that she heals quickly and that the antibodies will fight against anything in the future!

I’m sorry to read that Alyssa has Covid. I pray that she will have a mild case and recover fully soon. Sun bonnets are such cute things, and so practical. You’ve shown some lovely examples.

The post is wonderful, Laura. I smiled with the Holly Hobbie reference. My mom and I made Holly Hobbie shadow boxes and dolls a lot in the early 70s. And of course Sunbonnet Girls. Your finished product is lovely and so is the model.
Sending all good prayers, vibrations, wishes, whatever it takes for a full and quick recovery for your daughter. Your family has had a very tough year and I’m sorry you have to start the new one this way. Big hugs, j
