Chapter 4: October Blizzard

The Ingalls family moved to a territory that would later become South Dakota. Shortly after arriving, they would endure one of the hardest winters ever. Blizzard after blizzard would occur for seven months. Because the trains carrying much-needed supplies could not make it through it was a miracle they survived.  They subsisted mainly on bread and beans.

This week’s craft project was inspired by beans.

Chapter 21: The Long Winter

It was a happy day when Pa was able to purchase four pounds of beef! Ma said she would make a pot roast. Laura asked if they could have gravy too.

I used the recipe found in The Little House Cookbook.

It was unusual as the recipe called for homemade vinegar, cloves, and allspice. The end result was tasty. The flavors were somewhat reminiscent of other sweet and sour foods.  I added vegetables to the pot roast as well. It was served with homemade cornmeal muffins.

In addition, the progress on the Natural Form Era pioneer work dress is shared. I also answer a reader’s question from the week prior. Lisa wanted to know if I make the clothing I wear in the video.

This week I wore a 1950’s work dress I made last year.

Most of the clothing I make and wear can be found under the FASHION tab located underneath the Title Header (Decor To Adore).

I haven’t made a pot roast in a long time! I’ll have to check that out. I’m behind in the videos. I don’t know what happens to time when I come back to Lansing. I get overwhelmed!

I’ve decorated an apothecary jar with beans before, too! BUT I never thought to add such cuteness to the tops. 🙂

I bet pot roast with vegetables, cloves and spices must have felt heavenly. I can almost taste it 🙂
