It’s time for the October Pinterest Challenge. This monthly event is hosted by Cindy of County Road 407. If you are visiting from A Stroll Thru Life may I say “Welcome to Storybook Cottage!” Today I am sharing An Autumnal Scene In A Jar.
A Winter Wonderland Repeat
This month the Pinterest Challenge is a winter-themed globe in a jar. Our inspiration photo comes from Northern Feeling.
The jar image features:
- A glass jar
- Miniature trees and buildings
- Bottom filler (faux snow)
- Fairy lights
Over the years I have created many similar scenes. My most recent post to feature fairy lights in a jar was in July.
But the very first DTA globe themed post appeared way back in 2011.
It became pretty apparent when I reviewed past posts that I like creating winter themed scenic globes and jars.

So, I think you’ll agree that I needed a different challenge for this challenge.
I tried to recall if I had ever created a fall-themed vignette in a jar. Sort of, back in 2012.
A New Challenge
What to do?
The lightbulb moment came to me when I preparing for this week’s Lessons With Laura post. This week The Long Winter is the featured book. The Ingalls family stayed alive during the 7 months of blizzards by eating bread and beans for many, many months. Now if you are following along with the series you already know that each episode features a craft and as well as a recipe. The recipe was easy. But how do you make a bean themed craft that doesn’t involve a turkey shape?
Please tell me that you have made at least one of these in your lifetime.
The Autumnal Scene In A Jar features:
- A glass jar
- Miniature trees and treasures
- Bottom filler (I used assorted dried legumes: split peas, red lentils, and black-eyed peas.)
- Faux fall foliage
Assembling The Jar
Layer your various legumes.
Add the miniatures to your autumnal jar.
Top with a lid and add some faux foliage if you like.
Smile as your husband says “This creation is something to crow about!”
I hope you have enjoyed this month’s Pinterest Challenge. Tomorrow’s Lessons With Laura will feature a step by step video of making the Autumnal Scene In A Jar so come back for that and more!

Your autumnal jars are so pretty, Laura. I’d love to know where you purchased your jars or if those were heirloom pieces. I can see so many ways to decorate with those! Happy to be on this hop again with you!

I love seeing all the variety today! Layered legumes look so beautiful in a glass container, and so easy. Cute how you added the littles on top!

Actually, I have NEVER made a turkey from beans and noodles. But I love your scene. I think I’m going to try one of these, though I probably won’t get it by fall. Christmas is highly likely! It’s a wonderful way to coordinate with your lessons.

Love the rooster one and the hay stack one. Fun

I LOVE your mini fall scene in TWO jars! So smart to have this type of twist on the PC… And, great minds think alike, huh, Laura! Both used fall grains in our jars! LOL! Pinned two times!

So many fun ideas! I love the layers of autumn colored beans!

Very creative, Laura. Yes, I’m sure we all remember bean crafts. I love how you layered the beans on the bottom of the jar for color and pattern. Your figurines are very sweet. Love how you topped off the jar. You can definitely crow!!

S so cute Laura! I am kind of obsessed with miniatures and making little cloche scenes. I love all the ones you shared! Your painted gumball machine may have convinced me to paint my old red one . I have used mine for a Christmas cloche in the past too.
Your little fall displays are magical!
So fun hopping with you !

These are so precious, Laura! I miss the days when we shared more crafty decor on our blogs. I did a lot of candles nestled in rock salt in jars. I added fresh evergreen and festive ribbon to glass vases and Mason jars…I guess Christmas was the season to really get into that “snow”!! Thanks for the memories! ❤️

Laura, I saw your video on YouTube first this morning (11/11/20) and then stopped by. I’ve been catching up on all your Little House videos and they are wonderful! I love how your personality comes through and the bloopers at the end are cute!!! Give Gracie a hug from me. <3
Anyway, I'm sorry I missed this Pinterest Challenge as it would have been easy to create and fun. Might add mine on with this next one, just for fun. 🙂 Love how both of your apothecary jars turned out. Love Mr. Chicken and his new home!!!
Enjoying all of your dresses and creations. Sorry I missed your call if you were nearby… P.S. Working on FINALLY migrating to WP… Scary but done. Trying to type a post for this evening (SYS). P.P. S. Looks like links come over with the move now, just FYI.
Hugs,
Barb 🙂
