Are you ready for a fabulous scrap-busting project? This Quilted Heart Garland is so fun and easy to make!
What You Will Need
Here are the supplies you will need to create the Quilted Heart Garland.
- Scraps of fabric
- Scraps of lace (optional)
- Small pieces of batting
- Pinking shears or scissors
- Thread
- Heart template
Right-click on the template below to save the image to your computer. My heart template was printed out at a 5 x 7 size. But you can make it any size.
Place the template onto the fabric. You may need to secure it with pins. Then cut out the heart shapes. For each heart you will need two hearts made of fabric and one of batting. The batting will be sandwiched in between the two pieces of fabric.
I used pinking shears to cut out the fabric and batting. But regular scissors can also be used.
Optional Lace Hearts
I save even the smallest bits of yummy antique lace. When the bag gets full I know it’s time to create lace fabric. Simply use a scrap of cotton muslin fabric and sew on the lace scraps. On some areas a zig zag stitch works better.
At this point the “lace fabric” will look like a hot mess.
Just treat the piece like fabric and cut out more hearts using the template.
The sandwiched heart pieces (fabric/batting/fabric) are then sewn together. You can use a straight or zig zag stitch.
A total of 25 hearts were sewn to create a garland long enought to fit the mantel here at Storybook Cottage. You may need less or more.
Because I change up my Valentine decor every year I wanted the hearts to be multi purposed. So I simply attached them to cording with a mini clothespin.
You can also use twine or ribbon and hot glue the hearts to it if you want a more permanent garland.
Quilted Heart Garland
I like how the natural color of the wooden clothespins ties into the birch log insert in the fireplace.
Happy hearts!
I watched about 2 movies while making the hearts.
So, it’s not a super fast project. But it is satisfying to create something so cute that costs only time.
We have houseguests arriving tomorrow so there will be no Friday Favorites post this week. I’ll be back next Tuesday with more Valentine decor to adore.
Hope you are keeping cozy!

Your garland is really charming and the instructions very easy. I like the lace fabric and how it worked on the hearts and smart to use the clothespins!
