Hello sweet friends, I hope that you had a wonderful weekend. After a long and dry summer the dusty front porch at Storybook Cottage was looking tired. We are expecting a few visitors in the next few weeks so it was time for a Fast Front Porch Refresh For Fall.
Fast Front Porch Refresh For Fall
While the strawberry wreath was fun for the summer it now seems a bit out of season.
With Sweet Guy returning to college, and its assorted fees and textbooks purchases, I am currently on a very strict budget. It was time to hit the dollar store for a bit of faux greenery.
The sweet owl was found at Michaels. They had sent a $5 reward coupon for my birthday and with a sale he was free.
Make Your Own Decor Picks
My friend Michele had recently cleaned out her decor supplies and I had grabbed a rustic twig basket out from her donate pile.
To fill it up the mushrooms and owl needed to be transformed into decor picks.
Rummaging around in our kitchen catch all drawer I found some wooden chopsticks. The pointed end easily skewered into the styrofoam mushrooms. The owl was hot glued to the larger end of a chopstick.
You can also use wooden bbq skewers. They are also often sold at dollar and grocery stores.
Then all the elements were added to the basket and moved around until a pleasing look was found.
Two New Plants
The pots also needed some new plants. This time of year the pickings are slim at the nursery. But two cheerful plants were found at a Labor Day sale. They were added to the existing plants already in the pots to help fill them out.
There were two extra mushroom picks leftover. So they were just stuck into the pots to help create a cohesive look with the door wreath.
There is a birds nest on the lower level of the bench. I’m not sure if the family still has plans to use it so it’s been left alone for now.
For less than $12 a look that’s much more welcoming was achieved.
As it is not even quite fall on the calendar it’s nice that it is a soft nod to the coming season.
Have you decorated your front entry for fall yet?

I love the basket you made, and what a great idea to use chopsticks! I feel like the left side of the door needs something to balance things out, maybe a scarecrow and pumpkins and/or mums.

You know I love a good door greeting and this one is adorable! Love the mushrooms and little owl. Your porch looks happy and perfectly fall. pinned

Love the color of the door. It’s a small porch so the elongated table is perfect for the plants, I think. Very nice.

That is super! I love the mix you arranged in the basket! I need to find a slim half basket. I had two huge Adirondack baskets on our former home (arranged with DT faux floral, btw), and they were my favorite seasonal door decor. Of course, those were purged, and just as well. My cottage needs some thing smaller . For now it’s a transitional felted succulent wreath. Your plants are pretty roo, Laura.
