Hello sweet friends! Welcome to the August edition of the Pinterest Challenge. This monthly event is hosted by the amazing Cindy of County Road 407. Today I am sharing An Early Fall Mantel With Found Objects. If you are coming over from First Day of Home may I say, “Welcome to Storybook Cottage”. I loved Crissy’s fall-themed mantel!
Inspiration
This month the challenge is a fall-themed mantel. Our lovely inspiration photo comes from Janelle Trinette.
The image features:
- A mantel
- Jar
- Lantern
- Artwork
- Candlesticks
- Wood slices
- Pumpkins
- Leaves
When decorating the mantel I always like to look back at what I have done in previous years.
In 2020 Mr. Decor had recently cut down and tree and I went log crazy.
Topiaries were used to decorate the 2019 mantel.
The Challenge
This Pinterest Challenge was exactly that for me. A challenge. Truth be told I’m just not quite…ready to decorate for fall. It is still blazing hot here in Texas.
There is also the fact that orange is my least favorite color. There is A LOT of orange in the inspo photo.
My entire ginormous hearth is also orange-toned brick. I can’t wait to give a German Schmear treatment as soon as it cools down.
This is the primary reason my mantels generally do not contain shades of orange. It’s too much orange as you are about to see.
A visit to the decorating closet and a trip outside to the shed revealed I had everything I would need.
My look this month features:
- A mantel
- Jar
- Lantern
- Artwork
- Candlesticks
- Wood slices
- Pumpkins
- Leaves
An Early Fall Mantel With Found Objects
One thing I noticed right off the bat is that the inspiration image layered the artwork over a base of white shiplap.
I improvised with some cheap artwork that was originally shown on a home tour HERE. It was then painted over to create this HOLIDAY LOOK.
Next came an antique mirror I purchased several years ago at Round Top topped with an antique painting that was a work trade.
Then came a vase with fall foliage. I often use faux fall foliage. (Say that fast 5 times!)
Along with a lantern, a wheat stalk, and candlesticks. Each of these items has been seen numerous times in various posts.
All in all, I feel like I came did pretty well in the Pinterest Challenge this month and spent ZERO dollars to do so.
TRUTH: As soon as these photos were taken I took down all of the orange elements and replaced them with something a bit more neutral. But that is another post.
Up next is the delightfully inspiring Sweet Pea!
Enjoy!

HI Laura I love it. And I agree with the exception of my Autumn sign I spent zero dollars (this year). It looks great. Nice job! laura

Your fall mantel is beautiful, Laura!

Your shiplap accent board makes the perfect backdrop! Love the mirror with the artwork in front and the wheat looks so pretty in the lantern. Well done Laura!
Marty says
Love your mantel and that gorgeous painting. How fun to add the wheat to the lantern. Such a creative idea.

I love when we can pull new vignettes together together with things we already have. And I’m with you–it’s way too hot and too early to decorate for fall yet. I like the fall foliage–autumnal but not orange-y–a color that’s not my favorite, either.

Working with an inspiration piece only works when it works for you. I think it’s lovely but hey — if it’s not working for you, that matters most! Can’t wait to see the re-do!

It is hard to think about fall during these blazing hot Texas days. In spite of that, you have done a really good job!

Your mantle is beautiful Laura. Love every element!

Zero dollars Laura is dang good! I thought it turned out great. Even though it’s still super hot here I’ve decided since I love fall so much, I’m going for it! I went to BBW the other day and have already plugged in my Leaves scent. I get up every morning and walk through the living room or entry to get to the kitchen and the aroma puts a smile on my face. Hope you can get to that Schmear look for the mantel too. It’s going to be a game changer for you! Thanks so much for joining in. Pinned!

Hi Laura: Love how you styled your fall mantel! I live in Scottsdale and think we were in the same Redesign group when you lived here.
You have a wonderful blog!

Laura, I think your mantel is beautiful but I know what you mean about orange! … It’s not my color, either. I love the wheat inside the lantern and the painting you traded work for… Stunning!!! I love it’s warm fall hues. <3
Enjoy creating a newer mantel look,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂

Your mantle evokes the feel of the inspiration pic
I really like the 2020 log mantle, too

I love your brick fireplace surround. I don’t like orange either, but I see your surround as shades of brown. I’m so glad you wrote this post because I am going to have my fireplace surround built in that style. It is kind of post and baton.
If you want to see a bad fireplace insert, you should see mine in this new to me house. It is 1980s brass…completely. I detest it!

Beautiful job, Laura! I love how you layered the mirror and artwork. That mirror is gorgeous, by the way. Fun to be hopping into fall with you!

Laura,
It’s all so pretty for fall. I just love how you layered the wall art for interest. I also love the previous look. I’d have saved those logs also. They are perfect for fall vignettes!
Angie @ Postcards from the Ridge says
It’s definitely still hot here too! And I totally get what you mean about not being able to use orange on your brick fireplace. I did a paint finish on mine a few years ago and now any color works with it! Love all of your pretty accents and it’s awesome that you didn’t have to buy anything!

Your mantel is lovely Laura! All the layers add so much interest!

Laura, I’m with you on the orange. I still think you did a fantastic job working with the orange brick. I love the layering you did. It adds such depth. Love the shiplap.
