Chapter 5 Working In Town
In chapter 5 Laura goes to work in town. She sews men’s shirts to help raise money to send Mary to college. Her descriptions of Mr. Clancy’s dry goods store as well as its occupants make you feel you’re sewing right beside her.
Chapter 9: Blackbirds
Preparations are underway to send Mary to college and there is so much to do. Ma is worried about Mary’s dress. As a seamstress, I understand wanting to get things just right.
In the video, I am wearing a 1930’s Smocked Sleeve dress I made last year.
At the visit to the log cabin site, I am wearing the Natural Form Era pioneer work dress I just finished. All the details about the dress are shared in this historical Fashion Friday post.

Laura, your skill with the needle never ceases to amaze me. I’m guessing that lovely cabinet is yours. Perfection.

I would love to find some Lady Godey’s magazines! A co-worker let me borrow her mother’s collection of bound magazines and they were so interesting. It was fun seeing your little Featherweight. I have the same model, a $20 Goodwill find, . and I love that it’s the same age as me. Recently, I had my Pfaff in the shop for servicing and used my Featherweight to make most of my 1880’s bustle dress. I just love the sound it makes as it stitches along! As always, your video was great and I look forward to hearing more about your pretty Natural Form Era dress.

Oops, excuse the senior moment! I meant Godey’s Lady’s magazines!
