Saturday Smiles Let’s Dress Up

Greetings from Costume College! I arrived in L.A. on Thursday and it has been a true whirlwind. My mind is flooded with goodness which has spilled over into Saturday Smiles Let’s Dress Up.

Saturday Smiles Let’s Dress Up

You have GOT to see the Dazzling Color Photos of the Legendary Romanov Costume Ball of 1903. The ball was held in February 1903, at the winter palace in St. Petersburg. Members of the Romanov dynasty and the cream of the Russian aristocracy attended what is considered to be Europe’s “last great royal ball”.

Gentlemen of the Court men donned lavishly decorated caftans and boyar-style fur hats. While the ladies wore dresses embroidered with precious stones and kokoshniks (head-dresses). Many were adorned with the finest family jewels.

The last Czarina, Alexandria, was born in the German royal family of Hesse, and she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Her dress was made of brocade and decorated with silver satin and pearls. Check out the HUGE emerald on the bodice! All the jewelry was selected by the court jeweler, Carl Faberge. To create this dress today it is estimated that it would cost approximately 10 million euros.

Mark Your Calendars

Are you gearing up for the Downton Abbey movie in September? I am so thankful there is another theatrical gem to look forward to. A new adaptation of Little Women, by director Greta Gerwig, is set to release on Christmas Day. I shall never tire of the March sisters.  Meryl Streep plays the forbidding, rich Aunt March. I just want Amy’s pretty pink ensemble. There are more lovely images HERE.

Authentic Victorian Kitchen Design

One would think that this Victorian kitchen was a movie set design.  But it is the real deal in a turn of the century home located in Galveston, Texas. The kitchen was remodeled after Hurricane Ike caused extensive flooding in 2008.  All of the previous modern additions were removed and replaced with charming period details that were age-appropriate for the circa 1907 home. The entire kitchen project cost just $12,000. It features running water, electricity, refridgeration and more. Best of all, it will never go out of style.

Pure Joy

This is something that is long overdue but truly is so heartwarming. Target is releasing Halloween costumes for children in wheelchairs. It is called the ‘Adaptive Costume Collection’. Because all children deserve the magic of dressing up.

The Best Bar Cart Ever

I admire and pin bar cart images like nobody’s business. I’ve even shared our own bar cart quite a few times. But this Golden Girls bar cart decor made me laugh out loud. It has ALL the best features. Sicily! Cheesecake! Shady Pines Ma!

Thank you for being a friend!

I’m fascinated by the Romanovs – royalty has never really piqued my interest but the history of the European houses during the 19thC keeps popping up on my radar.

I love that Galveston kitchen about a million ways, such a classic.

Those Halloween costumes are the best!! Good for Target!

I hope you’re having a terrific time at Costume College!
