Welcome to this month’s Design Challenge hosted by the ever inspiring Cindy of County Road 407. If you are joining via The Ponds Farmhouse let me say “Welcome to Storybook Cottage!” Wasn’t Rachel’s transitional decor gorgeous? This months theme is Summer to Fall Decorating Ideas. I am ready for this long stretch of 100 degree weather to end. In trying to think cool I have created A Green Gables Inspired Kitchen Shelf.

The Inspiration
This months inspiration comes from Heidi at Eleanor Rose Home
The image features:
- A mirror
- Old books
- Antique vessels
- A bit of seasonal greenery
- Candles
- A hat
- Gingham fabric
- Wood and wicker
Anne of Green Gables
The image above, with its Gibson girl bust, books, gingham and hat reminded me of one of my favorite shows to watch in anticipation of fall.
The 1985 version of Anne of Green Gables has such wonderful decor inspiration.

Marilla’s kitchen is so cozy.

It has a shelf full of treasures.

A Green Gables Inspired Kitchen Shelf
One of the best things about the Design Challenge is that the purpose isn’t to create a carbon copy but to be inspired to create something similar.
You will find many of the decorating elements featured in the original image but I used them in a different way.
First and foremost there is not one, but three mirrors in this antique shelf that hangs in the dining area of my cozy kitchen here at Storybook Cottage.

I then added in some old books, a few antique vessels (the brown bottles) and a bit of seasonal greenery.

The straw hat and green gingham also make for sweet touches.

With the exception of the artwork (a birthday gift from Kirkland’s which reminded me of Green Gables during harvest season) all of the elements were things that were already in my decorating cupboard.

The wicker chargers and vintage glassware in autumnal hues help to make a pretty place setting.

A touch of wood and a candle that smells like fall give a nod to the original inspiration.

Up next is Bluesky at Home. You will Carol’s early fall entryway.

Your house and the accompanying sites are absolutely beautiful and really draws me in.
Thank you dear Ginene for your lovely words. You have filled my cup!
Laura, I’m loving your spin on the challenge with your Green Gables inspired kitchen and shelf! Your styling is perfect with all the fall feels, and you even accessorized with the hat! Adorable!
Thank you so much Michelle!
I hate great shelf. Beautiful styling.
Have a lovely day Rachel!
Of course, you are going to outdo us all with your Green Gables-inspired shelf. The details are lovely. And don’t even get me started on the tiny Toby mug! So cute! Glad you joined in, thank you. pinned
You ALWAYS inspire me Cindy. Thank you SO much for hosting!
Laura, I really love your Anne of Green Gables shelf and table combination!! She is still one of my favorite book characters, after Laura Ingalls, of course. 😉 I love how you captured the essence of not only the inspiration photograph from Heidi’s post, but also Marilla’s kitchen. I have a habit of photographing the t.v. a lot for inspiration for something I am working on. You caught Marilla smiling… Made me smile, too.
Enjoy all the gingham and some tea! Pinned several, of course,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂
Green Gables has been a favorite of mine since childhood!
Always enjoy how you decorate around a great theme, Laura. Now I want to see where I can watch the 80’s version of Anne;)
Hi Lora,
You can find all of director Kevin Sullivan’s work on Gazebo tv. You can rent or buy episodes or the entire catalog.
So pretty Laura and I like your interpretation of the initial inspiration. The shelf is perfect and I would love to sit in Marilla’s cozy kitchen. Your table is so cozy too…I set a similar table today on the blog today…. I guess the upcoming Fall Season is on everyone’s mind. Stop by if you get a chance. Have a wonderful week.. Kari @ Me and My Captain
Thank you dear Kari for your lovely comment. I am on my way to visit you!
Love all the gingham, Laura. The shelf is such a sweet addition to your setting. Anne is a great inspiration.
Thank you so much Carol!
Always fun to see how you’re decorating Storybook Cottage! I grew up on Anne of Green Gables and you really captured the feeling! Love the hat with the black band, that is so Anne! The whole room is so inviting, Laura!
Thank Cindy. Anne has been a lifelong friend of mine! 🙂
What a great theme Laura, your shelf looks so beautifully curated with treasures from your heart. I love the green gingham, so warm and cozy.
Thank you so much dear Wendy!
I love decorating from my cupboard. But you did something here on your wonderful table that I’m amazed I never did and will! Actually using your toby jug for matches (in your case!). I have several of them and while they look lovely in their little cabinet, they’d look even better on the table!
Hi Jeanie!
I LOVE Toby jugs. I’d love to find more to add to my collection. This wee one is my favorite.
I guess I’m just and old-fashioned girl. I love the old, dull, limp, crusted things of the past.. Love how you have connected this all to such a wonderful source. Makes me want to read the Anne stories , again. Sandi
Hi Sandi,
I am old fashioned too! I’ve loved Anne since I was a girl.
