Hello, my friends, today is the Fashionista’s birthday! Are you ready for some merriment and laughs? I bring you Saturday Smiles A Square To Spare.
Saturday Smiles A Square To Spare
If you aren’t familiar with the phrase I don’t have a square to spare it is based on this popular Seinfeld episode.
My daughter, like many others, has been sheltering in place for the past 2 weeks. She is alone without even a pet for companionship. Given that she lives in the area of Nashville that was one of the hardest hit by the tornado a few weeks ago she can’t really even safely walk around.
I was supposed to have gone to Nashville to help her celebrate. But, well… here we are. As a mom hearing that she is so lonely and not able to comfort her is difficult.
Last weekend, in a group text, I contacted several friends and family members and asked if they could send her a card. It would be a little something to brighten her days.
Someone inquired about a gift. My hilarious friend Kelly piped up, “Let’s all send a bit of white gold in the envelope. It won’t change the weight of the envelope. Just a few squares. Do you have a spare to square?”
Man do I wish I could be there when she goes to the mailbox and starts opening cards with three squares of TOILET PAPER!!!

Then on Monday the Fashionista sent me a text.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Grey Gardens, it is the story of Jackie Kennedy’s eccentric aunt and cousin Big Edie and Little Edie. They were the epitome of Quarantine Chic.
So I decided to host a bit of Facebook and Instagram fun. It is a way of giving my darling daughter something to look forward to each day. I went into all the details in THIS POST.
The bonus is that it is brightening ALOT of people’s days.
In short each day there is a theme. You take a selfie of yourself, kids, pets, etc. and post it on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #greygardensstyle2020
This allows everyone to put the hashtag into the Facebook or Instagram search bar and find all the people playing. It has been HILARIOUS!
Pig Pickin’ Cake
When she was little one of the Fashionista’s favorite things was a Pig Pickin’ Cake. It is SO easy to make and tastes great too. I’ll be making one today.
Space Age Meets Scandi
The Fashionista is an old soul. If you follow her on Instagram you know she dresses circa 1960/70’s EVERY day! Her home is also charmingly retro. She recently sent me this link to her Dream Home. It is absolutely 100% her. Our favorite accent is, of course, the two weiner dogs. Although not at all my style, I loved it as it reminded me of my grandparents house.
Built-In Plate Rack
This built-in plate rack created by Salvaged Living is fantastic! I’m currently eyeing the side of my fridge and wondering if something like this could be done.
Recreating Works of Art
The Getty Museum asked people to recreate major works of art from their collection using only things that they had at home. Having been to The Getty it tickled me to try and figure out which work was what. Click HERE for some big smiles.
A Busy Week
Just in case you missed it, earlier this week I made some Fun Fabric Rabbits.
I also shared how Mr. Decor and I are creating A Victory Garden For Blackthumbs which will make you laugh.
I hope to see you playing #greygardensstyle2020
Stay creative and safe!

Is that toilet paper in that painting re-creation?!!
I love the Grey Gardens idea. Hopefully I can play along this week!

Miles of smiles with today’s post, Laura. Happy Birthday to Fashionista! Her dream home reminds me so much of my first apartment – right down to the Marimekko wall art, to the lime green in the kitchen, to the macrame pot hangers and wall hangings. Oh my. My oldest daughter is also a throwback to the 60s. Love their style, for sure.
Happy Satruday.

Happy Birthday to The Fashionista! I think she was about twenty-one when I first started following you. And YOU! Such a pretty photo! Please tell me how you take care of your skin. You don’t look a day over thirty!
Sending love,
Jane
