If you love a high-end look for less then this Fast, Fab and Fun Update for Flats post is for you!
Fast, Fab and Fun Update for Flats
Last winter I fell in love with the embellished Stewart tartan loafers from J. Crew. Alas, their $198 price tag made me pause and hope for a sale. They sold out long before that happened.
The Supplies
But when I spied these Black Watch tartan loafers at TJ Maxx for MUCH less the fashion flame flickered once more. I decided to try and create a similar shoe.
- One pair of shoes
- Wire cutters
- One pair of large rhinestone embellishments. (I found the clip-on earring at Sam Moon.)
- Gem-Tac glue (I had this on hand but gorilla glue might work too.)
How To
To take and edit the photos, as well as write this post, took a gazillion times longer than the actual 5-minute project.
Simply clip off the earring wire if necessary.
Add glue to the back of the rhinestone and place it on the vamp of the shoe.
If needed, use a clip to hold the rhinestone in place until the glue is dry.
Let the shoes dry for a full 24 hours.
The embellishments are held quite securely on the shoe!
Date Night
Mr. Decor and I both currently have very busy schedules. We make sure to spend one evening a week focused entirely on each other. On this night we went out to our high-end grocery store and picked several fun items for dinner from the deli counter. The store has a nice sitting area with comfortable booths. It was a fun date for less than $20.
The shoes were comfortable all night long.
Special thanks to Sweet Guy for taking the photos of his dear old mom.
The blouse is also J.Crew. I bought it on major clearance last spring. It had oddly shaped sleeves which I refashioned/shortened into a more pleasing silhouette.
Do you have any frugal fashion tips to share?

Very Clever! I, too, eyed those flats from J. Crew but they were not within my budget (at all!) I’ll have to keep this trick in mind!

Cute! I have to wear flats due to balance problems–with any kind of heel, I feel like I am pitching forward. I’ve been wanting to visit TJ Maxx, and you’ve just given me more incentive!

Great idea! I not only want a shoe wardrobe update I actually need to replace a couple of pair soon, and this would be a fun addition. Your whole outfit is darling.

You look super cute, Laura, as always.
My flats that I wear almost all of the time are green velvet Supergas. I splurged on them when they were on sale a couple of years ago when I was still working and they are one of few shoe styles that have always been comfortable for me. I liked them so much, I ordered another pair recently and gave it to Jim to wrap up for me for Christmas. Yep, we’ve become those types of people, lol. I can’t wear any sort of heel and the fact that we don’t really go anywhere fancy, this style works best for me. It’s been a whole lot easier since being retired when it comes to fashion. 😉

This is just the look I’m looking for to finish my Mrs. Claus costume I’m making. I want to be a more updated glamorous Mrs. Claus to match my husbands costume I made which is more of a stately Mr. Claus. Thank you for sharing. As always, you inspire me. <3

Hi, Did you purchase the Black watch shoes recently at TJ Maxx? As I went straight to their website– I searched flats, plaids, tartan plaids and did not see those shoes online. Looking forward to your reply so I know whether I should head out to a store or just let the idea go if it was last winter purchase.
