Hello sweet friends. After months of warm weather, it has suddenly turned cold. It has been raining for the past 3 days here at Storybook Cottage. Soon a season of merriment will be upon us. This made me think about Laura’s Holiday Cape.
On The Banks Of Plum Creek
One of my favorite holiday stories can be found in the book On The Banks Of Plum Creek. Laura and her family travel to town for a special evening event at the church. Laura is delighted as she sees a Christmas tree for the first time. But then she notices something that fills her heart with joy and wonder.
Just then Laura saw the most wonderful thing of all. From a far branch of that tree hung a little fur cape and a muff!
Laura’s Holiday Cape
So many of you commented that you wished you had a similar cape. For my last birthday my friend Catharine had gifted me with some lovely little pieces of vintage damask and taffeta moire. I considered what to do with the pieces for a few months. Then it came to me. I would make capes!
I have to say I love wearing my cape. It makes me feel… powerful. Not in a superman sense but that people have worn garments such as this for centuries. There is so much history!
The limited edition collection includes a traditional Victorian styled cape.
Wee little capes with vintage calico linings.
A cape with a velvet bow.
A special wool mantle made from a 1840s pattern that my dear friend Becky gave me.
It is hand embellished.
You can find all of the one of a kind capes in my Etsy Shop.

These capes are absolutely gorgeous. I am saving to purchase one from you, as, like you, wearing items like this that have been worn in bygone days gives me a special connection to the past. And it would also be a special reminder of the sweet friend who lovingly sewed the cape 🙂 What a beautiful nod to both the winter season and our beloved Laura Ingalls Wilder.
