There is such delicious simplicity in eating seasonally. To enjoy foods at their peak of perfection is true joy. The Little House books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder share how once upon a time foods were enjoyed according to natures calendar. I hope you enjoy this simple and easy recipe: The Best Cranberry Sauce From The Long Winter.
The Best Cranberry Sauce From The Long Winter
“Laura and Carrie picked over the cranberries and washed them. Ma stewed them with sugar until they were a mass of crimson jelly.” ~ The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Ingredients
I began making my own cranberry sauce about 15 years ago. Over the years I have tried making several simple variations. This recipe is easy to make. What makes it amazing is the addition of orange, cinnamon and a slow simmer. Here is a recipe that I think Caroline Ingalls would have enjoyed making.
- One bag of cranberries, 12 ounces. (I used organic.)
- 1/2 cup of sugar (To make it AIP compliant I used coconut sugar. You can add more or less to taste.)
- One large orange zested and juiced.
- One cinnamon stick
Preparation
Combine all of the ingredients in a pot and simmer on low heat for at least 30 minutes. Remove from heat when most of the berries have burst. Let cool, remove the cinnamon stick, and transfer into a covered container. Refrigerated, the sauce will keep for a week if it lasts that long.
Pair the sauce with chicken, pork, rice, potatoes or simply slathered on a buttered biscuit.

This week’s video shares step by step how to create the cranberry sauce. There is also a craft and reading from The Long Winter.

You can involve children in the process by having them sort the cranberries just like Laura and Carrie. “Laura and Carrie picked over the cranberries and washed them. This is similar to miine, except that I add a small chopped apple and some pecans. I love cranberry sauce — one of my favorite parts of dinner! And I always pull out a few berries early on to coat in sugar and freeze!
