Hello sweet friends, I’m coming to you from A Cozy Writing Corner. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been writing at the kitchen table for many years now. If I am home alone that works well. If there are other family members about I often found myself getting distracted by having to answer an endless stream of questions. Or perhaps a television with it’s volume turned up too high. I needed a place go where a door could be shut. A small solitary spot full of hopes and dreams that could be realized in peaceful solitude.
A Cozy Writing Corner
I began to think about what that small spot might look like. French Provincial décor always calls me by name.
But perhaps something a bit more subdued would help my focus.
I have a tendency to get distracted by shiny things. So a simple desk was needed.
It didn’t need to be big. I love that this desk’s owner calls this her Motivation Station.

I have to mention that we do have an office in the attic. I never use it. It is a windowless box that is either boiling hot or freezing cold.
I liked the idea of a window.
I walked around Storybook Cottage and found an area with potential.
It required having to shift some things around and sell the very big and dated entertainment center in the sunroom.
But once it was gone it was as if a huge weight had been lifted from our home. It went to a charming lady who just LOVED it! I adore when things move on and find their perfect person.
Yes, a small corner next to a window would be just perfect for me.
Sometimes Perfect Requires Patience
Last fall I began looking around for a small desk. I cruised Craigslist. Estate sales and thrift shops were visited. I had alerts set on Facebook marketplace and finally six months into my search a vintage hardwood desk popped up that seemed perfect. I first shared it in this post.
When I went to go view the desk in person it revealed that someone had tried to apply a darker stain or wash just on the top and center drawer. Insert a deep, heavy sigh.
It would need to be completely sanded down and re-stained. Or lightly sanded and painted.
I loved the lines and it was priced at just $30. So, it came home with me.
I lived with the desk as is for about 6 weeks mulling over my two options.
I decided to paint.
A look at my Pinterest “Office” board revealed that I had pinned a plethora of pale blue desks.
Peaceful Blue
The desk needed a good cleaning. I believe it was made in the 1920s or 30s. A few dings were patched. Then it was sanded well.
I used an oil based spray paint that the name alone was fitting: Peaceful Blue.
It’s a blue that changes with the time of day. You can kind of see what I mean in the image below.
Now the thing about spray paint is that for a truly professional finish it takes time.
I would do the barest mist possible and walk away for two days.
Then the process was repeated.
It took over two weeks to get the finish you see here.
The desk is near a corner with good natural light.
The drawers hold all of my camera and YouTube video equipment.
Each drawer was also papered with Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic paper.
It’s like a secret that makes me smile each time I open a drawer.
The desk has been finished just in time. Sweet Guy is home from college for the summer. He’s taking an online class. He likes to work at the kitchen table along with music, television, Tik Tok and oh my.
So you can find me here. In my little corner of solitude.
You can come in if the door is closed but your question better be a very good one. Smile.
I’ll see you on Friday with another literary inspired creation.
I think you’ll love it.

Perfect! I love the color. I love my writing desk–lots of space, and near windows that look out on bird feeders and the wild bunnies that visit our yard. The only problem is that it is in a little alcove off the dining area. There is no door, only an archway. If anyone comes through the kitchen and dining area, they feel free to pop in and start talking. 🙂 Or if someone sits at the table and watches news on their tablet while having a snack—frustrating. I’m conflicted–I want to be available to my family. But in the midst of writing, you can lose a lot of ground if distracted. I’d love to convert the archway into French doors. But that would take quite an investment.

When Addi graduated and moved back home before getting married, I gave up my office for her. I’ve been stuck in our bedroom now for a year. I want a cozy office space that’s pretty and says Cindy. Love your blue desk and the chair looks comfy. Cheers to carving out your own beautiful space. I love it!

This turned out so well Laura. This is next on my list as I have been without an “Ann Space” for about seven years now. Now that Wendy has moved out, we’ve moved a bunk bed into her room for the grandkids/guests, but there is a gloriously empty corner just begging for a small desk for me. Estate Sales have been my mental health therapy since moving back to FL and a desk is on my list. I too like to take my time and really find something meaningful.
Love the blue!

This is so pretty, Laura! And I love the chair with it. It looks just right — and oh, that light! What a perfect find (and the price was right!) I love that peaceful blue — it is exactly that! Well done!

What a beauty! I would need a quiet, calm place too to create all that you do!

Laura, the cut-out where you’ll put your legs is really lovely. Excellent job of prep and painting. In the first picture of the desk, I thought it was an example from a magazine.

Good for you, both in letting go of the old and finding your own space.
