P. Allen Smith’s Moss Mountain Home

Happy travel Tuesday sweet friends. Today I will be sharing a recent visit to P. Allen Smith’s Moss Mountain Home. This post will share his gorgeous three-story Greek Revival-style home. An upcoming post will feature the beautiful gardens, daffodil hill, Poultryville and more. 

P. Allen Smith’s Moss Mountain Home

My longtime friend Kelly and I have had Moss Mountain Farm in Arkansas on our must see list for a few years now. As she will soon be moving to Washington state we made the trip a priority.

P. Allen Smith is a celebrated garden designer who specializes in timeless landscapes. Smith is also a best selling author of six books, as well as a host and producer of one of PBS’s most successful television shows.

Smith’s 600 acre estate follows the principles of Ferme Ornée (ornamental farm). Such farms feature a country home which is planned for aesthetic principles as well as for farming.

At the center of the estate is his gorgeous Greek Revival-style home that was designed to host large scale guest visits and entertainment. Many people are surprised to learn that the home was built just 15 years ago. 

Mr. Smith designed the home with conservation in mind. He used green building construction and materials to create the home. All gray water (such as that used for washing dishes, showering and such) is held in a pond for reuse for irrigating the landscape. 

As you tour the home it is easy to see that Mr. Smith is also passionate about preservation. He is an avid collector of antique furniture, paintings and accessories. 

Smith built his home to look out onto a stunning 200 year old oak tree. 

The front porch features a collection of various Windsor chairs, rockers and benches unified with coral paint. 

The Entry

As you cross over the threshold your eye is immediately drawn to a gorgeous marble statue of America. The restoration of this amazing piece was covered in this episode of his show. 

To the right is an impressive sideboard and stunning collection of portraiture. 

Formal Room

Also to the right off the main hall is the entry into the formal sitting and dining room.

Family Room

In an adjoining space is the informal sitting room and dining area. 

Kitchen

The kitchen is located just past the informal dining area. 

Second Floor

After ascending a lovely staircase you come to a large landing area on the second floor. 

There are two bedrooms on the second floor. You’ll be able to see the full master bedroom in the video which is linked down below. 

The guest bedroom has two full size beds. 

There are also several powder and bathrooms located throughout the home. However, overcast skies and low lighting made photography a bit of a challenge. 

The Sleeping Porch

Also on the second story of the home is a large screened in sleeping porch which overlooks the garden.

A gorgeous copper bathtub anchors one end of the porch.
