Hello sweet friends, I hope you have been enjoying a fabulous new year. I accomplished a major closet overhaul last week. All of my clothing was organized with DIY Closet Dividers. This is a fast, fun and frugal project!
Getting Dressed With Less Stress
During this past year the simple act of getting dressed stressed me out.
Like many others I have gained a bit of weight over the past few years. So, a good percentage of my clothing no longer fit. Instead of good clothing being worn it took up space and made me feel bad about myself.
There was also clothing that was ripped, stained, or missing a button.
I took every single piece of clothing out of the closet. The clothing was looked over and tried on. Whatever was an absolute “NO” was put in a box. I refused to consider how cute it was or how much I had paid for it. Someone else would love it and it wouldn’t mock me any more. Win, win!
Then I took on a three day task of mending and ironing every single piece of clothing that needed it.
I can’t tell you the number of times I have been late because I had to stop and iron what I needed to wear.
It was a big task that I made fun. Since I had been beyond busy before Christmas I took the time to watch all the holiday movies I had saved while I ironed.
I shared this task on Instagram.
DIY Closet Dividers
I then wanted to go one step further and organize the clothing by creating DIY closet dividers.
Dividers are good for:
- Keeping track of sizing ~ which is fabulous for kids clothes.
- Separating clothing into seasons.
- Sectioning off different garment types.
- Organizing various eras if you’re a historical clothing wearer like myself.
The Supplies
- Closet door hangers (You can also use small wooden tags with ribbons to tie them on.)
- Scrapbook paper/cardstock
- Glue (I used mod podge)
- Paintbrush
Step 1: Trace the shape of the door hanger onto the back of the paper and cut the shape out.
Step 2: Type up and print out the information you need. Cut out the labels. (You can also do this on a Cricut, etc if you have one.)
Step 3: Either trace the opening onto the paper or drill holes for ribbon if using wooden tags.
Step 4: Clip the corners if necessary and glue down the paper in place.
I made a total of 12 dividers in a little over an hour.
I can’t tell you the JOY that I now experience when opening up my closet door!
Do you need to do any organizing?

Love those markers but cracked up seeing the dates. You are the only lovely lady that needs markers that say 1890’s, 2930’s, etc.! Ironing with some dancing music helps me. Feel free to come tackle our closet when you’re done with yours. Not that I’ll have anything cute to look at. We could draw a few faces on the dusty surfaces though. That might be fun. 😉 Cheers to a new year of organizing, fun, blogging and family time.

I love those closet dividers. Right now I keep off-season stuff in a spare bedroom closet and the stuff that doesn’t fit as well at the far end. I do weed out things once or twice a year. I’ve been thinking I need to have a massive ironing session and get it all done at once. My husband has maybe 6-8 shirts that need ironing, and my summer dresses need ironing more than my winter ones do. I tend to iron a few things at a time. but I’ve thought that if I could get it all done, I wouldn’t feel behind. Plus, as you said, everything would be ready to wear (at least until they are washed and need ironing again). I like to watch movies while ironing, too.

A good closet clean up always feels good.
My dividers would say:
Presentable
Okay
crap
crapier !!!!!
Hope your husband is feeling better!!!

Those are really cute and how fun! Well done on the ironing. I’m not sure I even have a working iron. Maybe in the basement somewhere. So hats off to you. The closet seems to be the one thing I do purge regularly. Well done, my friend!

The closet dividers are great and I will be making some soon. I have another “trick” for organizing my closet: twice a year (May, November) I go through my closet following your plan, and when placing the remaining clothes back in the closet, I turn all the hangers the “wrong” way on the rods. As items are worn and put back in the closet, I put the hangers in the “right” way. I can tell at a glance what has been worn and what has not. I think this makes it easier to sort the clothes. Sometimes I can see why it hasn’t been worn. Maybe it is missing a button, torn, or other reasons which makes the decision to keep or not easier. Hopes this helps, it works for me.

Love this Laura! No one thinks of a closet as a stressor but mine sure is! I am in the process of weeding out and organizing right now so this post came at the perfect. Thanks so much for sharing. Pinned!

Such a fun idea! Cleaning and organizing the closet is so liberating! Why don’t I do it more often?
But I love the cute dividers you made — something I had never thought of before. Of course I had to pin it to my Organizing/Fantasizing board.
