Hello sweet friends! Over the long holiday weekend I began decorating the living room of Storybook Cottage. One of the first areas to receive attention was the hearth. It was transformed into A Little Women Holiday Inspired Mantel.
Film Inspiration
For inspiration on decorating the mantle I began by looking at the various décor sets of some of the Little Women films and the PBS series.
Natural greenery, brass, candles and red ribbon seemed to be quite popular in the 1994 version.
The PBS series also used greenery, brass, candles and added paper chains.
The 2019 film shared greenery, dried oranges, as well as tan and red stockings.
Over at the Laurence home an elegant gold mirror created a lovely backdrop for greenery and candles.

It’s always a bit of a challenge to decorate our hearth because it is HUGE!
I began by layering the largest mirror we have up on the mantle. Perfect for Amy’s airs and graces.
One rule of decorating is that a mirror should always reflect something lovely. So I tried to hide the ceiling fan with my Grandma Mary’s sheet music. I think Beth would approve.
Next, faux greenery was laid down. Stacks of books, that Jo loves to read, hold it all in place.
Gold beads and red ribbons were nestled in. Surely Meg would approve.
Beth’s little basket awaits her necessary needlework.
In the manner of the March sisters old favorites were simply refashioned.
The exception being the stockings. They were found at Dollar Tree. My friend Michele graciously embroidered them for me.
This mantel truly puts a song in my heart!
I’ll see you on Friday,
Laura

Very, Very nice! The stockings were indeed a find. My old house had ivy running rampant in the woods and I always used to decorate every mirror and picture frame. This house’s woods are just deciduous trees – I miss the free greens!

I try to read Little Women every year around Christmas. The story never gets old. Your charming mantel really captured the feeling of the March home as I like to imagine it looked, reflecting the interests of all four girls.
