Sunday Update Mr. Decor’s Accident: a week ago my beloved husband was riding his bicycle on the path he rides every Saturday and Sunday morning when the weather is good. He was on his second loop when he encountered major debris on the road at 20-30 mph. He became airborne and the brunt of the impact was to the right side of his head. Thankfully, he was wearing safety glasses and a helmet which was cracked clean through. He was unconscious and I am filled with gratitude for the two Good Samaritans, Angie and Bill, who called 911 and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived. Mr. Decor was taken to a wonderful trauma center and attended by fabulous medical personnel. Although he has a broken T6 his spinal cord is thankfully intact. He also has a broken finger, stitches in his chin and hand as well as the worst case of road rash I have ever seen. Everyone kept saying how much of a MIRACLE it was that his injuries were not worse than what they were. I spent quite a bit of time at the hospital chapel praying and giving thanks.
Sunday Update Mr. Decor’s Accident
At a week out Mr. Decor has been “quite uncomfortable” for the past few days. But we do see progress. He will have his stitches removed on Monday. There is still some amnesia/short term memory loss. We will see the neurosurgeon on Tuesday regarding his broken T6.
Mr. Decor’s accident came at a time in which Sweet Guy had already been quite ill for a few weeks and there were/are a few smaller issues that our family is dealing with. To say that I was being run off my feet would be accurate and something has to give. So I will be scaling back here on DTA for awhile. My plan is to continue with Sunday Smile posts and provide weekly updates.
This week I thought it seemed fitting to feature nautical inspirations. For those who perhaps aren’t aware Mr. Decor is an auxiliary member of the United States Coast Guard. He usually spends his weekend afternoons volunteering to provide care and aid to others.
I’m thinking about buying some fun bedding like this for Mr. Decor who LOVES color.
The Great Loop
Mr. Decor’s dream is that once he retires he would like to buy a boat to complete The Great Loop. If you aren’t familiar with the term The Great Loop is a continuous waterway that recreational mariners can travel. The journey includes the Great Lakes, Canadian Heritage Canals, part of the Atlantic, Gulf Intracoastal Waterways and the inland rivers of America’s heartland.
Kim of Shiplap and Shells has a new boat, The Wildflower. It is lovely inside and out.
Life Preserver
When I saw this recipe it reminded me of the life rings on Mr. Decor USCG boat. I’ll use sausage for the meatballs as that is a surefire way to please my husband.
Greek Revival Harbor House
I could happily move into this gorgeous home in Edgartown Village Historic District, MA.
I hope you have a sun filled day.

I’m sure this has been quite a week. I’m so glad that he was not more seriously injured. I hope and pray that there is good news from neurosurgeon. I’ll have to tell Bill about that continuous loop. He would love that.

Such a shocking accident. Good to hear how he’s doing. I hope the visit with the neurosurgeon goes well. I’ve never heard of the Great Loop but it sounds fascinating. We live in the Great Lakes region (northern Michigan) . Take care of yourself and I wish your husband the best!

I hope Eric gets good news at the neurologist on Tuesday. We continue to send positive vibes to both him and Ian. You’ve had more than your fair share of turmoil and bad luck lately and I’m hoping that will turn around pronto! Take time for yourself too, you are the captain of the ship and are much needed and loved.

Laura, thank you for posting this. I’ve been offline quite a bit the past few days and I was going to touch base this week if you hadn’t posted. I know how hard it is to keep up with everyone who cares after a cycling accident when there is still a lot in the air, so I am grateful for the update. His accident sounds similar to Rick’s this summer in terms of how it happened — and far worse in terms of broken bones. We’re both very concerned. Between the worry on this and Sweet Guy and the sad events of the past week, I know you are probably just hanging on. You can do this and so can Eric. We are stronger and more resilient than we think we are and you are fortunate to have an excellent trauma center and fine doctors in your area. I wish I lived closer to you so I could help take the load off but if you need to talk or decompress, please phone or email me. We who have men with bicycles need to stick together!

Oh my. I’m so sorry to hear about your husband’s accident. I’m thankful it wasn’t worse, though it still sounds like it left you both with a lot to deal with. Thank God for the two who called for help and stayed with him. I pray he continues to steadily improve.

Oh Laura,
I’m so sorry to hear about your husband’s accident. I will have to see your latest posts to see how he is doing. I’m so happy to hear that he had been wearing a helmet.
I love that he wants to travel the Great Loop after retiring. That’s what my husband and I are planning to do. Thank you for sharing my boat post. We think of Wildflower as it cabin in the sea.
