We are now living in an era of Zoom meetings, Youtube and Tik Tok videos, Facebook Live, as well as Skype calls. The writing is on the wall and the wall may need to be covered up. Here is how to Make A Double Sided Zoom Youtube Background For Under $15.
My husband has now been working at home for the past four months. He has regular online meetings. I had my first Zoom meeting in March. Sweet Guy has also had various virtual interactions that centered around college. We wanted a colorful as well as a calm choice for backgrounds.
We quickly learned that custom backdrops run around $400. There are free/lower-cost virtual options also available. I mean who doesn’t want a confused Travolta in the background?
It’s All Golden
While I love Modsy’s take on the Golden Girls living room the lower right-hand watermark kind of gives it away that this is not your home.
As an interior designer, I feel like I should share my real home.
The Supplies
- One large sheet of Foam Board Insulation (It can be found in the insulation area of most home DIY stores. The 8 ft tall size was selected which runs around $12. With our military discount the cost was $10.)
- Paper selection (We selected antique wallpaper purchased at an estate sale for $1. But maps, sheet music, book pages, magazines and more could also work.)
- Glue (Wallpaper glue, mod podge, or craft glue.)
- A container to hold the glue. (Paper plates or a paint tray work well.)
- One small roller or paintbrush to apply glue.
- Scissors or a box cutter with angled blade.
- Wallpaper smoothing tool. (I later switched to a soft cotton cloth as it worked better with the delicate antique wallpaper.)
If Desired
- Gimp (At craft and sewing stores. Mine came from Hobby Lobby. It was 50% off, $2. You made need more than one roll depending on the size board you create.)
- Hot glue gun and glue to apply gimp.
Many of the items listed above I already had on hand. If you need to purchase everything on the list your final cost may vary.

The board was measured to calculate how much paper would be needed to cover it.
Working in small sections the glue was applied and the paper was then rolled onto the glued surface.
The paper was then smoothed out.
Lather, rinse and repeat.
To ensure that the seams dried completely flat I used an elaborate smoothing system. (Smile.)
Once the paper is completely dry use a box cutter to remove the excess paper. This requires a careful and steady hand. Take safety precautions. Scissors can also be used.
If you want a completely finished edge or cover seams that did not cooperate, you can apply a decorative gimp with a bit of hot glue.
A Neutral Background
One side of the board features soft shades of white.
The board was made to fit between two existing sconces. Even so, additional lighting is beneficial. I have two softboxes but ring lighting also works well.
This option is perfect for lovely sewing presentations, small craft projects, and more.
Would you like a cup of tea? One lump or two?
Mr. Decor’s Choice
Mr. Decor LOVES color! Believe it or not, this is the side he loves best.
He likes to store notebooks and writing instruments in the basket. But a bottle of water and a granola bar can be found for meetings that last several hours.
Gracie’s Ready For Her Closeup
With my fashion photographer going off to college this old dog is going to have to learn the new trick of photography via a remote wireless shutter release.
I also have plans to help homeschoolers via my Youtube channel. My videos thus far have not been great. But like everything research and practice make perfect.
I hope you have enjoyed how to Make A Double Sided Zoom Youtube Background For Under $15. Let me know if you create your own.
Say cheese!

Great idea. I haven’t Zoomed yet, supposed to do one for Church class this evening. I won’t have a background made for that yet, but hopefully soon.

Very clever! Miss Gracie is a very good assistant. The only virtual communication I have is with my daughter in McKinney via Facetime. Her husband has gone back to his office in Richardson and she is to go back to her office next week. This whole situation seems so surreal and bizarre.

Very cool, Laura. I love looking at people’s backgrounds. Ratemyskyperoom is my fave twitter site! Your backgrounds are beautiful. I’d probably go with Mr. D’s choice! I’m a color girl!
