It’s time for the August Pinterest Challenge. This monthly event is hosted by Cindy of County Road 407. If you are visiting from Postcards From The Ridge may I say “Welcome to Storybook Cottage!” Today I am sharing A School House Themed Cloche.
A School House Themed Cloche
This month the Pinterest Challenge is a fall-themed cloche. Our inspiration photo comes from Home Stories A to Z.
The cloche image features:
- A glass cloche
- Rope handle
- Fall themed filler
I absolutely adore cloches! They have been used for centuries. The science-loving Victorians loved to use cloches to protect their botanical and taxidermic specimens. The cloches were hand blown. Each cloche was made to custom fit the object it contained. Meaning the entire glass cloche space was filled. This reduced air space which could lead to decay and dust.
I personally am not quite ready for acorns, pinecones, and fall flora. It is still way too hot. But I am in the process of creating an antique school room in my sunroom. So I gathered antique and vintage elements that fit a schoolhouse vibe.
The School House Cloche features:
- A glass cloche of course!
- A spool of twine as a nod to the rope handle.
- Mr. Decor’s great grandmother’s diaries.
- Vintage flash cards.
- Antique dice.
- Eiffel tower scissors.
The elements were arranged in a way that was visually pleasing. Following Victorian fashion, the cloche space would be filled completely.
I actually made the cloche itself way back in 2009. You can find that post HERE.
Would you like a sneak peek of the schoolroom?
There’s still quite a bit of work to be done. The reveal is planned for September 9th. Because in my day, school didn’t start until after Labor Day!
For now, the cloche sits on an old Encyclopedia Brittania. Book 11 starts with GUNN. That’s very appropriate for Storybook Cottage.
You can find other cloche ideas in the links below.
Up next is Paula from Sweet Pea!

Love your schoolhouse cloche. The bell jar shape is so unique and pretty, and love that base! Are you creating a schoolroom for decor purposes, or are you going to be homeschooling someone?

Your cloche is the best one!! It’s true how more is better in this case. I am excited to see your finished schoolroom. Since I am reading to preschoolers online and teaching drawing lessons to them, I had to decorate an area of my craft room as my online preschool classroom. Thank you for reminding me how I can boost up my little garland with alphabet cards!! Great job on your cliche full of sweet family memories ❤️

Your idea for a school house cloche is so fun! Tell me why you want to make an antique school house room? I know you didn’t live through that period and if you’re anything like me (probably not), you couldn’t pay me to go back to school so the thought of this is mind boggling. Even still, I”m looking forward to seeing the transformation! I know it will be gorgeous . Thank you for joining us. So cute!

What a great idea for a schoolhouse cloche! Are the Eiffel Tower scissors antique or did you buy them somewhere? I have a thing for cute scissors! I also have an antique chalkboard like yours. Mine was also missing the paper scroll at the top. I found a piece of wrapping paper that had the French alphabet on it and put it on the scroll. Looking forward to seeing your school days!

I adore this because I am SO not ready for fall. I want summer to continue for a rather long time. (It’s not as hot here as in your part of the country.) The use of the vintage school things really says fall without screaming it with pumpkins and acorns and colored leaves. THIS is my favorite mini-masterpiece of the day!

Those Eiffel Tower scissors are amazing, Laura! I love how you made it a school themed cloche. I had no idea you made the cloche itself, either. It looks like it came that way! Fun hopping with you!

Laura, I have a feeling that each piece in your cloche has special meaning to you, which is exactly how it should be. My mom was a teacher and would have loved your darling vignette! Pinning!

What a lovely idea to create a schoolhouse themed cloche! Love it, Laura!! The little scissors are really sweet… I am excited to see how your sunroom’s schoolhouse turns out. Makes me think of your last year’s Christmas theme and where you might be heading… I had an English desk and chair but the top fell apart so it went with many things for donation when we made the move. The chair I still have and would look lovely in with your decor. <3
Happy decorating and enjoy your lovely cloche,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂

Your cloche display is so sweet! I love the sweet, simple arrangement you have set up and the cloche is lovely. I will have to check out your how to. 🙂 I will be back, I promise to check out your reveal!
This year is a little different since we will all be worrying about the health of the students and teachers. Thinking of your young son on his adventure to higher learning.

Laura, what a unique idea for a cloche. They are so perfect for creating displays. You’ve created a really interesting vignette. Great to be on the hop with you again.

You know I always love your themed ideas, Laura:) Back to school themes are so fun; I love that you’re doing a whole room dedicated to it! Great idea to switch up the fall cloche idea to a school one; the individual takes on these challenges are always so fun to see!

So so cute! The cloche, I love it! I need to try my hand at that as I’ve always wanted to make one but could never seem to figure out how without it looking fake. I would never have guessed yours was homemade.
Now look, don’t be slowing down fall on me…lol! I love fall and always try to get the decorating done sooner in hopes it will cool it off and make things more bearable! I am in NC and this humidity is awful, especially this year for some reason. I love schoolroom themes, they always bring a flood of memories back. Loved elementary school but the rest they can keep…lol.
