What’s Growing In The Victory Garden

Hello sweet friends! I hope you are having a joyful week. The days seem to pass quite quickly here at Storybook Cottage. It’s been two weeks since I first talked about a garden for black thumbs. But oh boy plants are busting out all over! Here is What’s Growing In The Victory Garden.

If you follow my Instagram Stories on Sunday I shared that I had actually harvested enough lettuce for a lovely spring salad for three.

The Kitchen Garden

Just outside the backdoor is the kitchen garden. Lovely things are growing swiftly in pots. These green beans were seeds just two weeks ago! I may need to thin them out.

The carrots are doing well too.

Oakleaf lettuce and the Pink Brandywine tomato is flourishing as is the Golden Jubilee tomato vine.

The pepper plants have doubled in size despite being a snack to something. I have looked and can’t find anything. ??? Suggestions appreciated.

Over in the garden bed everything here has also doubled, even tripled, in size. The arugula even began to bloom. So we ate it. In the previous post I was advised that nothing will grow under an oak tree. I think the jury is still out.

After all, I was once advised that peonies don’t grow in Texas and well, here we are. This bush has loads of buds.  This is in the wildflower garden that I started from seed and you can see in the background it too is doing well.

Beautiful Blooms

Spring is always my favorite time in the garden. The Copper Iris put on a two-week show.

Due to a roofing accident, we had to transplant my all-time favorite Sterling rose tree. I was SO happy to see that it survived. The scent is intoxicating.

This pink rose tree I rescued from a trash pile last year. It is thanking me beautifully!

Another miracle is our Peppermint Rose tree. Last spring a tornado came through and almost snapped it in two near the base.

Garden

Mr. Decor lovingly gave it a band-aid.

The blossom reminds me of The Red Queen’s roses in Alice In Wonderland.

Garden

The pink climbing rose has just begun its seasonal show. Soon it will be a solid pink archway.

What’s blooming for you?

Your garden looks fabulous, Laura. It will be a long time before we see anything like that here! The irises are a gorgeous color and look so healthy and well done with the lettuce and beans. Yummy looking salad! And beautifully presented. No guesses on your leaf-munchers but I hope it won’t affect the peppers. I can’t wait to see more!

What a lovely garden you are developing, Laura. I have radishes and carrots growing, and snap peas, but they are all quite small yet. My herb garden is showing signs of great growth and I’ll soon be harvesting oregano to dry for the next year. Many of the spring bulbs are finished, but tulips are standing proud and colourful in pots and beds. I’ve planted beets, onions, and spinach, and in a month will put out tomato plants, zucchini, beans and squash. We can get frost into May, so it’s better to wait. How wonderful that your peony bush is budding. I have one that is at about the same stage, and others quite a bit behind yours. Gardening is so satisfying, isn’t it?

I’m glad all the plants are doing so well! Not much here besides tulips and dogwoods, though the rose bushes are full of buds. I like to fill our planters about this time of year but will wait til it’s safe to shop again. I would love to try peonies.

Oh Laura, I loved seeing your roses and other flowers in bloom! Your veggie garden is really taking off and I can’t believe you have already had a salad harvest! In Colorado we have such a short growing season (but no floods or tornadoes when I live). My daffodils are just ending and the tulips have buds. Will look forward to lilacs by early May unless we get (another!) Spring frost. So happy for you and the bounty you will enjoy for months to come…..carol

Laura, Wow! you sure have a ‘green thumb.’ Your garden looks amazing. The copper irises are my favorite. Take care and stay safe and healthy. Joan

Your roses are just beautiful! I love the striped one. The one on the arbor looks like it will be solid blooms in a few more days. It’s still cold in Indiana. Maybe sleet tomorrow. My tulips are beautiful right now. Thanks for the lovely post.

The pink climbing rose is gorgeous. Things are just starting to green and pop up here. Soon we’ll be pulling weeds nonstop! Happy weekend to you.
