Today it is back to school for Sweet Boy. Woohoo! When school ended in early May the boy and I made a “to do wishlist” and I am happy to say Sweet Boy deemed it a successful summer. I, however, am just exhausted. A bedroom fit for a wee world traveler.
Let’s celebrate by showing you his finished room. (Although as Mr. Decor says, nothing in our home is ever finished, it is merely between transformations. 🙂
Back in December, I showed you a curtain topper I had made for Sweet Boy’s room. This window treatment was affectionately named the raggamonster. Yet somehow a great deal of time has passed before I finally got around to showing you the rest of his room.
A bedroom fit for a wee world traveler
To give you a bit of background on how the rooms style was selected, you need to know that one of sweet boys favorite tv shows is The Amazing Race. One evening last fall he said to me, “Mama, I’ve had a train room for a long, long time. I am getting bigger now and I would like an AMAZING room.” I knew instantly what he meant and thought it would be so much fun to create a room fit for a world traveler. But I was sad to see the room of his toddlerhood go. The train bedding was selected from Patch Magic and I just loved it.
(If you love the train bedding too please email me as I am selling this gently used set. The curtains were shortened with stitch witchery and can easily be let back down to their full 84 inch length. )
Soon after our conversation I found myself at the Rose Bowl flea market. There I discovered a vintage school room map, a globe, a few suitcases and other accessories. Sweet Boy selected a color from the map and we repainted the room “Glass Bottom Boat” by Martha Stewart.
Travel Themed Accessories
A few old travel posters and other artwork helped to set the theme of the room.
A ship for the seafaring traveler…
For those who love to fly the friendly skies…
How about some very old maps?
The huge vintage school map fills up the large wall space quite nicely.
The dresser holds another globe that is often carried into the living room when Sweet Boy watches T.A.R. It helps him to see where in the world Phil is. I often tell clients to make sure that their mirrors (particularly those placed above a fireplace) reflect something of beauty. Thankfully, I practice what I preach. 🙂

I hope your sweet boy has a wonderful school year. His room looks fantastic. I love the globe on the dresser. The maps are great incentives to learn new things and can spark lots of “talk”.
Have a good week.

A very cute room for the young traveler. It seems so atypical of a young boy without super heroes, Star Wars and the like…but what a lot of fun he'll have imagining all of the wonderful places to go around the world.

Absolutely perfect boy's room!

Hello Laura, Chapeau to you! Not only has this world traveler room turned out fantastic, you did it in Summer vacation! Applause! My son (13) has asked us a 1000 times this vacation, when do we finally start making over his toy story (!) bed room and all we did is going to Ikea. Which in fact was very fruitful, we saw a very big map and we all liked it, so perhaps we can go for the world traveler room too. I'm awaiting the next two posts with a little impatience!
Have a great start of the week! (ah, I forgot, having this done IS a great start of the week!)

Your son got the perfect room from T.A.R and you made it happen. When my three sons were little their rooms were boring. This is our first year we don't have to school shop, their in collage now. Big boys, wow that was fast.
Enjoy,
Debra

Here's to you and your sweet boy and a new, wonderful school year! 🙂 I absolutely love what you've done with his room!! I'm also amazed that he allows such order and coordination, as my Sarah insists that her room be all her own – I had a little say so on some of the decorating, but normally it's a mess of teen posters and the like.
So, anyway – I'm impressed!

What a great boy's room! I'm big on geography, too. It is hard when our kids move from toddlerhood to big-kidhood, isn't it?

As a mom to two little boys, this post is near to my heart! I'm just waiting for them to outgrow their dinosaur bedroom and be ready for a “big boy” room. You did a fantastic job at creating a fun yet sophisticated haven your kiddo. Nicely done.

Boats, planes, maps, yeah, yeah, yeah. Those are can't miss boy things! You don't call him “sweet” in front of your friends or his? That is horribly embarrassing from boys of all ages.

Hi Laura,
Thank you for visiting my site, it was nice to have your company! Childhood is fleeting and you have created a wonderful haven for your little guy to dream about his future and explore the world. I lived in a far away land for 5 years in Dubai, so I have a special appreciation for your choice of the world traveler theme.
Enjoy this day!

The room is looking great, and I loved reading about your projects! I want to stencil some burlap to make a seat cover with so I'm on the hunt for some number stencils…I want them to look exactly like yours…that sort of old timey general stencil font. I'm going to do our house # and place the chair inside our front door (I think. 🙂
