I absolutely love the new hair bow and accessory trend for adults. But I wondered, Can Older Women Wear Hairbows?
Can Older Women Wear Hairbows?
I have reached an age where I now ask myself “Is this look too young for me?” No one wants to be accused of acting like mutton dressed as lamb. So I googled and also searched on Pinterest the topic “Can older women wear hairbows?” Here is what I found.
First, you will laugh when you see what Google and Pinterest consider what an older woman wearing a hair bow looks like.
Then you will discover that you CAN wear a hairbow over the age of 40 IF
You are Kerry Washington…
…Coco Chanel
or have MARIE in your name.
Such as Anne Marie Bullen.
Or Rose Marie.
You can absolutely say YES!” to hair accessories if you are a DARLING grandmother.
Like the Queen.
Or if you have a tremendous style like Mara West…
…and this lady who has tons of moxie.
I think adding a scarf to the hair looks great on all ages!
Style icons, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy Onassis all wore scarves in their hair when they were young women as well as in their glorious golden years.
If you do wear this look it is recommended you keep clothing basic and other accessories minimal.

So would you wear a bow?

While I admire hair accessories on others, I feel like I’ve got a costume on when I add something, so no, I wouldn’t wear a bow. But I’d admire any woman who did.

Oh my! I am thinking its a no vote from me but never say never. lol
You have to admire the moxie of the women wearing the large bows and interestingly tied scarves. But I am thinking those 60’s trends, like poodle skirts, corsets, and pointed bras are best if left in the past. Fun for a costume and even OK for a sweet little old grandmother but it’s hard to be taken seriously when your accessories just grab too much attention, and not the good kind.
Choose your accessory according to the occasion and outfit. A black satin ribbon holding back a ponytail could work. A big flowery bow tied on the top of your head….maybe best left for costume day. lol But that is just my opinion! 😉
Thanks for the great post! You always write about such interesting topics! Have a great weekend! Cheers 🙂

I’m still laughing at that ginormous bow in the old photo. My middle name is Marie so I could but probably wouldn’t. I do like the scarf tied like a headband . Not sure how I’d look though. Very interesting post!

You know, there’s not really a rule! 😉
There’s a famous poem called something like “When I am Old I Shall Wear Purple.” We should wear it now. Purple and bows and whatever.

Based on what I’ve seen the British Fabulous Fashionistas wear, the answer to your question is “yes” as long as you wear it confidently and with elan.

Of COURSE you can wear a bow. Doesn’t have to be big (or can be!) — a lot of them don’t even require chutzpah. And scarves? Of course! I do (although when I tie one on the top of my head I look like Lucy so I generally find a better way to do it. But sometimes not because they’re just fun! I will say I don’t think I could pull of Moxie Lady’s bow, though. Proportion is everything!

Hi Laura!
You know I have a SIL that could wear a hair bow , scarf or a chandelier in her hair and she would look adorable! She’s now 60 and can still pull it off. I”m a short hair person and there’s not much you can do to add to short hair except mousse! LOL But when I need to I turn to hats. At times they’ve been my friends and I’ve decorated them with a vintage pin or boho flower. That’s as far as I can step out. But if a person can look in the mirror and say “I love this!” instead of ” I look ridiculous!” then it’s a go. My motto it “Wear the fashion, don’t let the fashion wear you!” Great post!
Blessings always, Edie Marie

If my hair were still long I would definitely wear a simple silk bow tied around a low pony tail. How elegant at any age!
Thinking of finding a scarf to wear wrapped around my bob tied with a low knot tied at the side/back.

Laura, have you seen the wired bandanna hair bands? If not look them up on Pinterest. I think they are snazzy, especially when working in the garden or a dirty job around the house.

Love it all. , Thanks for the pics !!

I do love bows and hair bands – being in my mid-50’s makes me think I’m too old, but you may be convincing me to give it a try! The ladies in the photos are gorgeous, and I love the feminine look they portray. Thanks for sharing these ideas!

That’s a good question! I used to wear bows around my pony tail as a young lawyer going into court. I still wear a pony tail, not so sure about resurrecting the bow! But I do think I could pull it off lol Thanks for the inspiration and thanks for sharing at Vintage Charm. xo Kathleen|Our Hopeful Home
