There is nothing like the impending arrival of a gaggle of guests to get you motivated to finish projects in your home. Some of you may remember our wine rack bathroom. I wrote a post about it last January. Since that post, absolutely NOTHING has been done to the room. The problem is that the sink needs to be replaced. The thirty-year-old cultured marble sink and surround has yellowed beyond the point of repair. Like anything else, I have hit the pause button because just that one task creates a possible domino effect. But I do like the idea of Hanging a Mirror OVER Another Mirror.
Some of the domino effect thoughts are:
- When the sink is removed will it damage the mirror above that has been epoxied to the wall?
- Will the sink removal damage the cabinet underneath?
So I have done nothing. But now feel I must do something.
Hanging a Mirror OVER Another Mirror
Sounds so simple right?
It would be if perhaps I wanted to use a mirror with a long leather strap I could hang right above the existing mirror.
Or if I simply wanted to use a thin wire cable.
Layering is another great option but not when a sink and water are involved.
Trying to find a way to hang a mirror over a mirror or layer a mirror over a mirror has not resulted in an EASY button. Believe me, I’ve googled every type of description you can think of.
The results have offered :
- Suction cups with hooks.
- Velcro strips.
- 3M command strips.
But I want to use an antique French mirror.
So, I don’t want to use a somewhat reliable method that might send my lovely mirror crashing to the tiled floor at 2 o’clock in the morning.
I found only ONE possible solution. This involves drilling a hole into the existing mirror to hang hardware.
Still not an easy fix.
But I CAN see it in my head. Once done I would go ahead and paint the base of the cabinet navy blue. When I do get around to pulling out the sink if it needs touchups so be it.
In the meantime here is the mirror in question carefully propped up on the faucet. The faucet will be replaced when the sink is. The black spray paint job, done by a former occupant, is peeling rather badly.
Now it’s your turn to convince Mr. Décor that this is a good idea and to do it this weekend.

I love , love, love this mirror. I can't wait to see how you do this. I have wanted to do a layered look in our master bathroom but like you hadn't found a good way of doing it.
I am sure what ever you do, this little bath will become a jewel. But if that is a precious antique mirror, I would be a little timid of hanging it in a bath room over a tap. Especially if people might brush or floss their teeth there (I know, ewww, right!) or if there is any chance of the humidity damaging the lovely frame or mirror. I have seen the backing on older mirrors become damaged by cleaning substances as well.
As for hanging a mirror, what about a piece of wire hidden by a piece of beautiful ribbon or piece of canvas webbing (I am thinking of the kind used for belts and purse straps)? Since its pretty much impossible to hide the hardware, make it a part of the decoration, is what I am thinking of.
Or maybe hang just an empty frame over the existing mirror or even hang a narrow curtain or window scarf around it?
Or even take the bull by the horns and get rid of the sink and mirror all together and do the redo. It might not be as bad as you think. Its a tiny room and a cute little sink with a bit of paint will make it all better. lol At least that's what I keep telling my poor hubby as I talk him into another redo! 🙂

Actually a very cool idea.
We took down our mirrors when we put up our new ones in the master bath – never even thought of doing this……I DID want more of the wall color showing so I don't regret it, but this is a neat idea.

Here's our bathroom at the moment, first phase of re-do – will get to phase 2 after we get our daughter's wedding paid for. I am very conservative and careful about budgeting though I think about little else. I loathe our old shower and can't wait for it to be gone!
I love doing that in my living room, was planning it on the kids bathroom, but with kids, I thought it wouldn't be a good idea. Love yours though!
I would layer this mirror in a nanosecond!! Just be sure that you have a stud in the appropriate place before you drill a hole in the original mirror. DON'T ask how I know this!!!

You can touch up the faucet with more spray paint to get it to last a little longer.
I did layer a mirror and hung it from a cord that was tacked into the wall above the builder mirror. Eventually, I just took the builder mirror down and repainted the wall behind it. Have fun with your guests.
Hi Laura, several years ago I did the same thing you are contemplating. My handyman glued a mirror to our bathroom mirror and he and a helper held it in place for several minutes probably about 10 or 15 minutes. No drilling involved and the mirror he attached was pretty heavy. It held beautifully, I don't remember the name of the adhesive but I'm sure a good hardware store could make a recommendation. I had never thought of layering mirrors before reading your post. But I loved the inspiration oictures and so I think it's a great idea!
I have a large mirror from an old dresser propped in between the two sinks in the master bath in what was mean to be a vanity area. Works for me!
