A Colonial Williamsburg Fall Inspired Tablescape

Hello sweet friends! The cooler temperatures have been such a welcome relief. I have slowly been adding a few fall touches to the rooms here at Storybooks Cottage. Today, I am sharing A Colonial Williamsburg Fall-Inspired Tablescape.

The Della Robbia Style

Way back in 2012, after an autumn visit, I wrote a post titled The Holiday Wreaths of Colonial Williamsburg. I loved the fall decor, which was created from natural elements.

The Holiday Wreaths of Colonial Williamsburg

While at Colonial Williamsburg I learned that this type of decorative abundance was known as the Della Robbia Style.

Orange and yellow citrus fruit hang on one of the Christmas wreaths of Williamburg.A blue room and fireplace mantel are decorated with greenery and oranges.

The bountiful harvest style is inspired by the work of the 15th-century sculptor Luca della Robbia.

Luca della Robbia the Younger

He is known for his religious plaques made with terracotta and glaze. He would often surround the border of his plaques with seasonal fruits and vegetables to create the illusion of a wreath.  Italian della Robbia-Style Glazed Ceramic Plaque of the Madonna

This year’s fall color palette here at Storybook Cottage features soft shades of turquoise paired with neutrals.

I first layered some leaf placemats, found at a thrift store last year, on the center of the table.

Next came some Della Robbia inspired topiaries.

TIP: This look can be achieved by spray painting various faux fruits and selecting faux berries and leaves in similar shades. The  various elements can be attached to round styrofoam or floral foam with U pins or hot glue. Urns can often be found at estate sales, thrift shops and home decor stores.

For my recent birthday Mr. Decor gifted me new stainless flatware. It is the Louisiana pattern by Onieda.

The napkins are vintage gems found at the thrift store.

Over on the sideboard, similar elements were repeated.

The silver tea set, gifted to me by my friend, Wendi Lou Lee, is surrounded by velvet pumpkins, acorns, and leaves.

I tucked in a few fine fall feathered friends to both of the arrangements for another touch of cohesiveness.

Love this! So beautiful! Great ideas. Glenn and I visited Williamsburg during the holidays several years ago. These images remind me of all that beautiful botanical decor! we saw. Great memories.

This is a beautiful, elegant table and dining room. I have a feeling anyone would feel very special and pampered to settle down at that lovely table. I do love the Della Robbia look. His sculptural pieces have always been favorites of mine.

What a wonderful source of inspiration for a tablescape! You’ve created a table that is decidedly contemporary yet incorporates design aesthetics (and the spirit) of another time and place. The topiaries are striking and I love that you added birds to both the centerpiece and the coffee/tea service. Happy Fall!
