Happy Valentine’s Day sweet friends! My heartfelt wish is that you are spending the day surrounded in LOVE. Whether it be with a good gal pal, a canine companion… or just you yourself indulging in your own love language. Love comes in so many forms, not just what consumerism presents it as. May this Singing Valentine Costume and Video makes you smile.
Simplicity 2040
A few weeks ago I asked in a post Which Valentine’s Dress Should I Sew? Through comments and a poll on Instagram the 1957 Simplicity 2040 dress won by a landslide.
I made view 1 of the dress. This pattern did not show me any love. Ha! It was so temperamental. I could not get the collar to sit correctly. Perhaps if the pattern had been cut more on the bias that would have helped? But after numerous attempts and time running out I had to move on.
So the collar is a bit like love: perhaps a bit wonky but still should be shared.
The front button placket was also tricky. I ended up not following the very complicated instructions and went rogue.
So the bottom line is I would not make this pattern again. But it absolutely could be me. Again, I’ve only been sewing a few years and still have much to learn.
The vintage crochet was originally on a pillowcase well past its prime. The hand crafted lace was still worthy of love. So, it was carefully removed and then handstitched onto the collar and sleeves.
I also altered the sleeve pattern and made it one inch longer for more coverage. #arms that wave back at me
I used Sewrena’s tutorial to make the covered belt.
Singing Valentine Costume and Video
For this project I used:
- Two pieces of pink posterboard
- Two rolls of crepe paper
- Vintage flowers
- Hot glue gun
- Ribbon for straps
I first made a heart template from scrap paper and then traced it onto the posterboard and cut out the heart shape.
Next, I tightened the tension on my sewing machine and set it to the longest stitch to gather miles of crepe paper into ruffles.
If you don’t have a sewing machine you can pleat ruffles by hand. I shared that technique on this craft.
Both techniques are going to take some time. Remember, this is a labor of LOVE!
Then simply tack down the ruffles or pleats onto the posterboard using a glue gun. I started on the outside and worked in.
Next, arrange your flowers in the center of the heart to mimic a candy box.
For visual learners everything is also covered in the video below.
So Who Did I Sing To?
I donned my costume on a very cold and blustery day.
The wind really whipped the back streamers that were made from leftover lengths of ruffles.

It was a hard Valentine’s day for us this year. Too much sadness. But good to be together and safe.
