A Little House Christmas Red Mitten Garland

It’s such a festive and busy time of the year! Have you had time for any holiday crafts? Here is a cute and easy craft to create A Little House Christmas Red Mitten Garland.

A Little House Christmas Red Mitten Garland

A Little House Christmas Red Mitten Garland

This is the super easy red mitten garland I made for our family room tree as well as a larger version created for the backs of the kitchen chairs that you saw on the Christmas Kitchen Tour.

Little House Kitchen

I was inspired to create this project after finding this ginormous Christmas stocking at an estate sale last summer.

Christmas in July

I had removed the applique pieces from the stocking to create patterns that I used to design a new tree skirt for my living room tree.

But needless to say, I had TONS of red felt leftover. Lightbulb moment!

I could create Laura’s red mittens that she received as a Christmas gift.

“In each stocking, there was a pair of bright red mittens and there was a long, flat stick of red-and-white-striped peppermint candy, all beautifully notched along each side.”  ~Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House in the Big Woods, page 74.

Cutting mittens

The Mitten Pattern

Red felt is pretty easy to find at most craft stores, and even at Wal – Mart in the sewing section.

Here are the two patterns you will need. You can enlarge them to the size you need on your computer.

Then it is simply a matter of cutting the pattern out. I needed just eight large mittens for the backs of our chairs. Our 7 foot Christmas tree, however, required 100 of the mini mittens to create a garland that would cover the entire tree.

I put on a Christmas movie classic and enlisted the help of my children. We were finished way before the closing credits.

Note: Smaller children (ages 8 and below) might not have the dexterity required to cut out the mittens.

Cutting out the pattern

Assembling the Garland

Once you have your mittens cut out creating the garland is so easy that even the littlest of children can assist.

Thicker twine and standard clothespins, from the Dollar Store, were selected for the large mittens. The smaller twine and clothespins came from Hobby Lobby. (Use a coupon!)

Assembling the garland

Use a simple knot to secure the twine to the back of the chair. Then attach the mittens to the twine with the clothespins.

For the tree just simply wrap the outside branches of the entire tree in twine ~ much like you would add a string of popcorn.

Then clip on the mittens, using the clothespins, and space them approximately 10 inches apart from one another.

I’ll be revealing the tree in all it’s “Little House” glory very soon!

Did you ever have a pair of red mittens?

The red mittens give such a cozy touch both on your chairs and on the Christmas tree. I remember loving my mittens, but I can't remember if they were red.
