Bits of Bliss Lark Rise To Candleford

Do you need a family-friendly show to watch while the networks are showing reruns? Today here is a Bits of Bliss Lark Rise To Candleford.

Right now I am thoroughly enjoying this new to me BBC series. It was based on a series of books of the same name written by Flora Thompson. The show originally ran from 2008 until 2011 and it is currently….my one weakness.

Bits of Bliss Lark Rise To Candleford

The main heroine of the story is Laura Timmins who bridges the gap when she leaves her family who are poor peasant farmers living in Lark Rise.

Laura moves to the market town of Candleford to begin an apprenticeship with the town’s postmistress, Dorcas Lane.

Laura’s father, Robert Timmins, is played by Downton Abbey favorite Mr. Bates.

For those who watch “Call the Midwife” Nurse Crane shows up here as the beloved “Queenie” accompanied by her hilarious husband “Twister”.

There are also members of the gentry such as Sir Timothy and Lady Adelaide Midwinter.

Lady Adelaide and Sir Timothy Midwinter - Olivia Grant and Ben Miles in Lark Rise to Candleford, towards the end of the 19th century (TV series 2008-2011).

As well as a host of other memorable characters such as the spinster Pratt sisters.

If you adore English cottages, Victorian fashion, colorful characters and family-friendly viewing you will love this show.

You can find this charming BBC four-season series for sale on Amazon and eBay. Some libraries also carry the series. While Netflix on-demand has temporarily suspended its BBC programming (WHY???) Hulu has picked up the slack and I am thankful.

Enjoy!

Bummer it's not on Netflix! That looks right up my alley and a good substitute since I'm missing Downton so much. I'll have to see about getting Hulu. Thanks for the recommendation, Laura. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Laura, I too am a lover of BBC and Larkrise to Candlleford. I have to watch this series at least once a year. I'm glad you told us Hulu picked up the slack for Netflix on BBC viewing. I will go there to get my weekly fix. Thanks, Laura!

I thought you might like to know that there is another series much like Larkrise, and it's call “Cranford”. It's very well done, and it done in the time period as well. I enjoyed both of these series. If you asked me to choose the best one, I would have to say Larkrise. But Cranford is definitely worth the watch!

My husband and I enjoyed this series as well as Cranford and Call the Midwifes. Foyle's War is also an enjoyable series.

I love posts that share great programs to watch. Thanks Laura. Also loved your post on the Christening of Princess Charlotte.

Oh my. I was surprised to see your news about BBC shows not available on Netflix. So I clicked out of here to check and in Canada we can still get them. But Lark Rise to Candleford has never been available on Canadian netflix. It's a show I'd love to watch. Perhaps the library has it.
Loved the post on the princess' christening.

We love this series. I couldn't really enjoy Call the Midwife though. I wonder if there are any more you would recommend! Sweet hugs, Diane

I don't have cable TV so I usually order quality series to watch. I got hooked on this one, ordered the rest over time and was heartbroken and dismayed when i found out they had cancelled any more. I have watched each set at least twice or more ! 🙂
