Create Easy Watercolor Pillows

I am so excited! Today the Summer Tour of Homes starts over at A Stroll Through Life. Every day this week Marty will be sharing six homes with sweet summer style. I was honored to be asked to join in on the fun this Wednesday. One of the projects that I did to summarize my front room was to create fun and vibrant watercolor inspired pillow covers.

They are fairly quick and inexpensive to make and you can customize them to your exact color décor.

You will need:

Sharpie markers in the colors of your choice.

(You can buy single Sharpies at Staples and Hobby Lobby but I opted to just get a pack. Use a coupon!)

Rubbing alcohol

A spray bottle

A natural pillow cover in cotton, linen or ramie fabric. I found mine at Ikea.

You can create a freeform design using any color combination. I opted for very little white to show through.

Once your pillow cover has been colored it is best to take it outside and lay it down on a recycled plastic bag. Pour rubbing alcohol into the spray bottle and thoroughly saturate the surface of the cover. I also worked it in really well with my hands by pressing down on the cover.

You can let it dry flat or for a more ombre effect hang it up to dry.

It took about two hours to dry. You then want to set the color by either running a hot iron over the fabric or place the cover in a dryer for 20 minutes. It is best to hand wash the fabric separately if it needs cleaning in the future.

I simply used the existing pillow form I had on hand. I love the bright and fun pop of color it adds to the space.

Perfect for the summer!

What a pretty way to colour fabric and the water colour is such a lovely way to make a room look light and fresh. I use alcohol markers for my paper crafts but never thought of using them to colour fabric. Thank you for the great tutorial! 🙂
