A Pretty Medicine Cabinet

Recently when I googled the words “A Pretty Medicine Cabinet” I began to think that perhaps those two words together just might be an oxymoron.

A Pretty Medicine Cabinet

A Pretty Medicine Cabinet

I could find images of cabinets that held pretty soaps and bath oils.

I also loved Martha Stewart’s idea of lining a BATHROOM cabinet with galvanized steel and using magnet-backed tins to organize hair supplies.

But where were the images of a pretty MEDICINE cabinet? Like with aspirin? Am I the only one who has a need for Benadryl on occasion? This was the closest I came. An image of a Civil War era medicine chest. Hmmmmm. Ok.

I mean I have been decanting my olive oil and dish soap in the kitchen for a while now.

Ditto for the bath oils near my tub.

I also thought about my spice cabinet makeover.

Since ancient times people have been storing their everyday essentials in various vessels. But we can thank the Victorian’s for elevating the practice to the pretty (and possibly deadly) level.

This then led me to think about liquor decanter labels. I know…my mind works strangely. Can’t help it. It also on occasion sings “Brandy, you’re a fine girl…”

How I Transformed My Cabinet

So I bring you my medicine makeover. I first sorted through my jewelry making supplies and then bought a few additional items at Michael’s.

Next, I printed out the product names on heavyweight cardstock.

The words were cut to fit and placed within the jewelry frame. A simple chain was attached to “o” rings.

“Glossy Accents” (available in scrapping supply stores) was added to create a clear, hard finish that would protect the paper. It is opaque when it is first applied and then dries clear.

I also decided to transfer my boring bobby pins into a sweet china box I found at the thrift store.

My eyeglass cleaner went from being stored in an ugly plastic bottle into a pretty blue one.

Now I know that a pretty medicine cabinet is not for everyone. Particularly homes with small children where such bottles could be a safety issue. But perhaps this post will provide you with inspiration to create your own idea of a pretty cabinet.

Happiness has now been bottled.

What a graet idea! Since I live in the South and we drink sweet tea and unsweet tea I've been trying to figure out how to make decanter labels for tea pitchers. You just solved that issue for me! Your cabinet is beautiful!(Plelase don't feel obligated to reply, I know you are busy now.)

Wow, this is such a great idea. I too, am one of those people who does not like the bottles items come in and I like to transfer them into fancy ones. Love the chained labels. Very clever and very pretty. 🙂 Kit

I dream of a medicine cabinet like this one. I started but never finished. I used silver plate boxes and little cups to hold razors and other doodads. I also have a framed baby picture of myself in there. The inside is painted sage green. Like your bottle tags. Might make some of these myself.

Your medicine cabinet is sooooo pretty! We are in the muddle of bath renovations and I keep dreaming of the day when I can add the finishing touches to our fresh and cheerful completed rooms.

    Hope you are doing OK and taking care of yourself as well as your family. Thinking of you often! {{hugs}}

I found your website, exactly the same way. I googled pretty medicine cabinets and thank goodness your website popped up. I absolutely love that medicine cabinet! Is it something you custom built, or can I find it somewhere?

I love that Idea! Although, just to warn you, placing meds on clear bottles will sometimes make them loose their effectivity. Most meds are “photosensitive” so you may want to switch to darker colored bottles (Something like olive green perhaps?). But I love the idea, and I will try those too! Thanks!

    Hi Laura,

You left no way for me to contact you directly so I hope you find this response.

The medicine cabinet itself came from Lowe's approximately 3 years ago.
