Last week I was visiting my favorite thrift shop to pick up a few books for a new project. Instead, I brought home a vintage settee. A Sweet Settee That Cuts The Mustard
A Sweet Settee That Cuts The Mustard
They were literally unloading this gem off of the delivery truck. I followed the men into the store and immediately took a picture with my phone and sent it to Mr. Décor with this message. “I know you’re not overly enthusiastic about watching tv in the wing chairs. What about this? It’s comfortable, in great condition and the price, well let’s just say I am currently guarding it like a hawk until I hear from you.”
His response, “Should I bring the truck?”
Have I told you all how much I love Mr. Décor?
So the wing chairs were moved into the bedroom in front of the bay window. The settee was put in the front yard and immediately inspected by Rudi. I admired her curvy legs…
…and softly padded arms.
Then I wondered if I should keep the tufting when I reupholstered her.
I saw an image on Edie’s blog that made my mind do a 180-degree turn.
She found a thrifted chair in mustard and didn’t change it.
Clever Edie just added a hot pink pillow and a blue batik ottoman and wildly enough this pairing spoke to me. No, let me correct that statement, it yelled my name.
Then I saw Edie’s workroom and I realized that for all the white, cream and beige I have in my home I really and truly love color.
Wouldn’t a wall of plates, in a riot of color, look adorable over my settee?
I’m not sure if a plain linen colored couch will cut the mustard anymore. Especially when I found this pillow that looks so cute on the settee as is.
So ladies what would you do?
Continue on a path of transforming an office into a Bohemian Rhapsody?
OR
Reupholster/slipcover Miss Mustard in white, beige or cream linen?
If you like the reupholstered option, would you leave the tufting, reduce the tufting or totally eliminate the tufting?
Decisions, decisions.

I think it looks great as is! If you get tired of it then you can put a slip cover on it or redo. But I would enjoy the rich color for fall and Christmas!

Wow wow wow!! What a FIND!! I loveeeeeeeeeee it!! What store did you get that beauty at???? I need to stalk your vintage shops!! I love it as is…maybe just shine up her wooden legs a bit… :):):):):):):):):):):)

What an incredible find! I would probably re-upholster it in a slightly more neutral fabric and then go crazy with fun pillows. That way, I can change them on a whim. I think the mustard could really work as is though if you didn't want to go through the hassle/expense of changing it.

Go with your gut girlfriend. With your amazing design flair it will be a work of art no matter what you do (on a personal note though, I would leave it alone, just give it a thorough cleaning and let it live the life it was intended for).
I would only shabby chic it up if the upholstery was in bad shape.
Hugs,
Meri

Laura, it is a great find. I am all for using it like it is for a while and see how you feel about the color. Also, did you know that you can successfully paint fabric and there is a great tutorial of how to do it at 155 Dream Lane. She just redid two wing chairs that now look like a million dollars. So, before going to all the work to reupholster, I would definitely try the paint. I think the style is perfect. Hugs, Marty

I love the cover Miss Mustard Seed did. I may have to try one like that for a little chair I have. I think the first picture you have would be beautiful in your room. Good luck! Can't wait to see what you do!

Wow what a great find! It's perfectly shaped for elegance! I love the bones but I would probably recover myself I love neutral colors but perhaps you are on to something and we should all add a little color and spice to our lives! Good luck, either way it will be fantastic!

I love it just the way it is–Bohemian? Sounds FUN!
I wouldn't take a drastic turn, though…wait awhile.
Great find!

If the fabric is in good shape, I'd be tempted to leave it. You can always have a slip made for a lighter look during the summer. Love the lines of the settee! Thanks for sharing.

That was a steal. I like the tuft but that's me. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.

I would go with the reupholstered light linen look and NO tufting.
But for now you could leave it as is for awhile! you can always reupholster down the road.
I like color but the all white is what resonates with me. So peaceful and restful. You can always throw in pops of color and change accessories when your main palette is white – natural!
Sharon says
Sence it is in great shape and you like the color , leave it as is . You can always recover later.
Jeannine says
I think I lean toward the leave as is camp. A nice white slipcover for spring and summer would be great, but the pop of color for fall and winter is great. What about Mr? What is his idea? Afterall, It is for watching football, right? I love it the way it is

No tufting, maybe a slipcover. I never find such great stuff at my thrifting places! Your husband's a doll. THis is perfect for Club G.W.!

WoooooW!! What a great find!! I love it in the mustard color!! I say just add colorful pillows. Then, if you don't like it…change it!
Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says
Wow! You were in the right place at the right time, Laura! What a great couch. I'd say, if it's in good shape, get it cleaned or clean it yourself. If you want to go the reupholstery route, I love tufting myself, but would never attempt it on my own. If you can do it or it's reasonably priced to have done, I'd do tufting.

What a GREAT find! I LOVE the color and I would just give it a good cleaning and polish and call it Beautiful!
Have a great week!

Love it Love it Love it!!! I would leave it as is, just clean it and add some pillows and maybe a great throw over the back if you want to add color. Later on down the road if you decide you need a change then go for it. But for me, I would leave it.
Sheila says
Wow, what a great find. I think you should leave it like it is. So many colors can go with it. Greens, either olive or chartreuse (spelling?); blues, pinks, reds. How about plum or magenta or oranges and browns go well also. I love the texture in the fabric as well. Lovely piece of furniture. If you just have to change it out, slip cover it so that way you can change your mind again later.
Jen says
What a fab and lucky find! Right now, I am seriously thinking that leaving it would be an awesome idea. Color just makes me happy and I love seeing how people use it in their homes.
I am looking forward to seeing how you decide to use it!
Kim @ Cheap Chic Home says
I love the color gold, it's so versatile. So I guess that's a vote for leaving it as is. I know what you mean. I have color all over, but sometimes want to go with whites and tans… If you do reupholster, I vote for keeping the tufts and two cushions.

It's always fun to see your new banners 🙂
I would leave it for now and enjoy the color(S). With the holidays coming..I think it would be nice as is.
Warmly,

p.s. you guys are cute in your halloween costumes.

I agree with Shannah- I like a neutral colored couch with lots of colorful pillows that can change with the seasons (and your mood!)
Also wanted to say — love your November blog header!

I would leave as is for now and get used to it, then make a decision. I do like the slipcover option, but Miss M looks super as she is and is a step away from your comfort zone which is always good. Like the accent pillow and to me color is ALWAYS good. One thing I would do right away is fortify those seat pillows and make them more comfy for Mr. Decor, of course. And I like the two cushions! Love it! Ann

I just redid my grandmother's Louis VX sofa, check my blog on Project Mondays, a number of Mondays back. She had yellow velvet, with tufting. I stripped 'er down and rubbed ebony stain on her. I just today got her back from the upholsterer with a white brushed cotton and the tufting in place…bench seat instead of 3 bottom cushions. Will try to get a picture up soon…in the middle of a total LR redo!
For you I would definitely keep the tufting and reupholster, and do the bench seat, I think it really updates the 'old' pieces.
I heard you got to meet Lisa Porter's mom…if she's anything like Lisa, she's a jewel!

Oh my, she's on a roll… Sugar and fun overload do that to a person.
Well, I too love Mr. Decor. He not only does “The Crane” and goes playing around in the neighborhood but he also owns a truck that bring such treasuries home…
If I were you :dreamonteresa: I would keep Miss Mustard the way it is and add the odd colour to your liking. I like its used and loved look as it is. But that's me – and RUDI 😉 – who is trusting you to follow your heart and marvel us with the solution.

Hi Laura!! I tend to really go for the calming neutrals, but I think if you love color you should leave it as is for a while. Enjoy the pop of color. I agree, the pillow you put on it looks great! You can enjoy the change of pace and then make a decision after you live with it for a while. If you do decide to change it, I'm a huge fan of slipcovers. They clean easily and can be changed out whenever you please. Well, that's my 2 cents!!!
Have a fun with it!!!

leave it be, love it as is. great find. I could visualise chocolate and cream cushions on it. x

What a beautiful find !! It's gorgeous, as is, but I, too, am a big fan of slipcovers. I know whatever you decide to do will be gorgeous … look forward seeing! And, thanks for your kind comment about my Fall kitchen. 🙂
Debbie says
OK, first… FABULOUS!!
Second, I think you should leave it as is for a while to try it out. It's better to try it mustard than regret not having done so.

Reupholster, but I like toned down styles. Thanks for visiting my blog!
Kelli @ The Turquoise Piano says
First of all, I'm totally jealous that you got this settee. That said… I would reupholster it in beige with tufting and stain the wood dark. You can always add colorful pillows. But, that's just my taste. It's great as is too! Good luck!
Terri says
I like it the way it is! What have you decided to do?
Mimi says
I would redo it with tufting then a a splash of color in a great pillow.

Well,I just have to say I'm totally in love with the copy of the Mustard Seed covered sofa. It's just too stinkin' charmin'!!!
God bless ya and have yourself an extraordinary day!!! :o)

Well, I would skip the tufting….Way to much work! I like the slip cover idea, but then again I am seeing more mustard colored decor, everything eventually comes back into style…There I have been no help at all!

Skip the tufting. You want to make this piece look more contemporary. Paint the wood, maybe a black or a fun color. You could recover it in a linen or a great geometric pattern. I don't know what the room looks like, but the black wood with a black and white geometric pattern would look great.

Bohemian is always the way to go as far as I'm concerned. You can always play it safe later. For now, be bold!
Renae Moore says
Come on over Laura and check out the sofa…room still not finished but I did a mini update on what's going on around here!
Auntie Em says
Great sofa. My brother and SIL had one like it but with three cushions when they were first married. I like option 1 but with a 1 piece cushion and skip the tufting since those little crevices are just great places for dust to gather…like belly buttons on furniture. THEN do your slipcover in mustard, or flowers or stripes or whatever you like. Or even make a couple slipcovers while you are at it. So when the day comes when you love pale green or sky blue, the mustard couch won't be an eyesore but the perfect piece of furniture!
Love watching your room transformation. I need some inspiration to get into gear to finish our home when the renovations are done. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
