Spicing Up The Kitchen

I add a bit of salt, pepper and olive oil to almost every dinner meal I prepare. Recently my salt shaker met a disastrous end when it was dropped on the tiled kitchen floor. Instead of going out and buying a new set I looked around for something I already had on hand. I spied these children’s berry bowls tucked up in a closet. It occurred to me that they could work as salt/spice cellars. Which led to Spicing Up The Kitchen.

I placed the dishes on a vintage ironstone platter I had found at a thrift store for $1. Then I thought I could pretty up my olive oil by transferring it out of its plastic bottle. I had purchased a bottle of hand soap from Anthro and loved the glass container so much I kept it long after it was empty. I made a quick trip to a restaurant cooking supply shop. Just 50 cents later I had a spout for pure and good olive oil.

I rounded out the vignette with a $1.00 estate sale find of an antique child’s china teacup filled with Herbes de Provence bundles.  I soon realized I didn’t like the “pinch” method of delivering spices to meals. So I set out to find some wee spoons to rest in the dishes. Oddly enough I found both of the children’s doll spoons for mere pennies at another estate sale. The silver spoon was as black as night but a bit of polish was all that was needed. I know the spoons don’t match, but a silver spoon would soon become damaged in the French sea salt. So a sweet porcelain spoon works very well.

How do you spice up your kitchen?

Good MOrning Laura! I spice up my kitchen with garlic salt – I use it alot on meats. Those cherry blowls are so cute and go perfect. I really like olive oil….it's so good for you too. Nel just had her birthday and Jess did a post about Las Vegas. I think you'll like it since you love to travel so. I had my kids when I was very young and didn't get to travel much, and I really admire people who do. Have a beautiful week.

Good Morning Laura, I love this post! I bought a vintage sugar and creamer a few weeks ago and have looked for an inexpensive tiny spoon. You have given me the idea to check for children's or doll tea set spoons – thanks!

Hope you got caught up on the laundry! It never ends, does it??

I think the white porcelain spoon for the salt and the silver one for the pepper are just perfect!

A great (and beautiful) reminder that with just a little looking we often find we already have all we need 🙂

Resourceful, and pretty too! You are so good at repurposing. Open dishes of salt and pepper would soon be spilled in MY kitchen! 🙂

    Laura,

What a creative way to display your most used spices. The wee spoons and tea cup are so sweet. I love the re-purposed use of the Anthro soap bottle. My most used spices include: tumeric, cayenne, cinnamon. Also use olive oil and fresh pressed garlic daily.

    Your Friend,
    Deborah

Mmmm, all set up to provide dipping at each dinner, Laura! Before I had to go gluten free, I used to love going out to dinner {and even at home} and dipping bread in a mixture of olive oil and whatever we decided to add to it.

Laura, I love the idea of your new Wednesday theme! And my favorite herb combination is Herbs de Provence. I can add it to just about anything and it always makes it better. Ann

My kitchen is pretty boring, but I love yours. Wasn't it great to see Will and Kate in the US! Kate is a fabulous dresser! I think I might have something for Wednesday, I'll be back…I sound like Arnold!

Great idea! I have a small pottery bowl with sea salt next to the stove…along with decanted olive oil, garlic bulbs, and coarse ground pepper. It's so convenient to have everything right by my cooking area…

    Hey pretty lady,

Again, another kindred moment….I, too, cook with mostly olive oil, sea salt and freshly ground pepper. I also use a lot of fresh lemon juice, but I guess that wouldn't work well in your set-up….I can just see a dried up ole' lemon sitting there………not good!

    Hope to see you soon.

    Hugs,
    Meri

Hmm…that looks so much better than the plastic containers from the store. I'm just happy if I can keep the kitchen unburied from the clutter!

I also use a lot of fresh lemon juice in any dish like salad, rice, or any drinks. Well, I also like to re-using old things instead of buying new.
