On Wednesday I took my 9 1/2-year-old Sweet Boy on our annual pilgrimage to see the Easter Bunny. As his sister is 22 years old I have had many visits with this well suited furry friend. Keep their ages in mind as I now tell you a story. Warning: young egg collectors should not read any further. Kids Say the Darndest Things Easter Edition
Kids Say the Darndest Things Easter Edition
After our visit to the Easter Bunny my son and I walked back to the car and got in. Before I started the engine I heard: “So mom, I have a question.” “Yes?” I replied. “The Bunny Man (as my small guy affectionately calls him) is he… is he like… you or dad?” My heart fell. But how I parent is that if my children ask, then I am always honest. I turned around to look at him in the backseat. “Yes,” I said. This was met with silence and looking down at his hands. “Are you ok? I asked.” “I’m worried.” came the reply. “What are you worried about?” I questioned. “Do I still get a basket and get to go on the egg hunt on Saturday?” he inquired. “Do you still want to go on egg hunts?” I asked. “Yes, I do,” he said. “Then I will happily take you. But in the spirit of love and giving, which is what the Easter Bunny is about, we must keep the special secret to ourselves and not tell those who might still believe.” I said. “Oh yes! I wouldn’t tell. I will keep the secret.” he said.
Then came a very earnest and heartfelt look on his face.
“Mom, does Sissy know?”
I somehow managed to keep a straight face and answer.
“Yes. Your sister knows.”
“Man, she is REALLY good at keeping secrets.”
Happy Easter to you all,
Laura

That's an adorable story. 🙂 So cute.
Funny, my sisters and I never believed in Easter Bunny because the giant furry rabbit is just so obviously a costume. 🙂 Still, we always got Easter baskets and we still do, always did egg hunts, but this year Sarah won't have one (egg hunt) because she won't return until very late Sunday night. She will get her Easter basket then, even though she's 15. Jim has been known to buy me a basket and I'm…. well, I'm in my 40s. 🙂
Hope you have a blessed Easter with your sweet family,
Linda

It's always a sad moment when they figure it out – I always thought my kids played along a few years because they were concerned just as “Sweetboy” was that if they knew, then it would all stop! Love that he thought Sissy might not know….. 🙂 Ann

What a beautiful story. My older son also asked that question at 8. Unfortunately when I answered, I killed off Santa, too.
We were in the car, and he said, “My friends say there's no Easter Bunny.” I responded, “You're friends are 8. They don't know everything.” True statement without a bunny pronouncement. He said, “A bunny, mom, really? That doesn't even make sense.” So I said, “Sometimes it's nice to believe in the magic of things. You had some really fun magical holidays, and it's important that you let your little brother(he'd just been born) experience that same magic & wonder, so we need to keep it a secret. You need to pretend that the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus are real for your baby brother.” He responded, “Wait, you and dad got me that bike?” Oh, crud. Big oops. My adult mind had lumped them all together, but his child mind hadn't.
Thanks for sharing your Easter Bunny story. I love the question at the end. “Does Sissy know?” Priceless.

What a cute story! It really tells of loving and well brought up children to know they have such concern and thought about others. You are and awesome Mom to a real sweetie!
Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Just too cute, and too funny! I think it would be good if some adults would busy themselves with egg hunts and child-like wonder and the renewal of Easter!
