This Blogger Creates in a Closet Made Over for $15

This is my guest bedroom and there is a crafty little secret hidden in its midst. This Blogger Creates in a Closet Made Over for $15.
This Blogger Creates in a Closet Made Over for $15

This Blogger Creates in a Closet Made Over for $15

I create behind the guest bedrooms closet doors. I truly adore having an area where I can work on various crafting and sewing projects and can close the door on any creative messes if I need to stop for awhile. The entire transformation from a closet to a creative space cost just $15. It now holds all of my favorite treasures.

closet transformation

The closet first received a fresh coat of white paint that I already had on hand. I then headed to IKEA in search of storage solutions and a work table. Its a good idea to always check the “as is” section first. I found just what I wanted. Two bathroom sink cabinets without doors for $4.00 each.

closet transformation
Sink cabinets, what? Yep, I knew I was going to cover the tops of the sink bases with some sort of work table so it didn’t really matter what they actually were, only that they had shelving and were inexpensive!

closet transformation
I then found an IKEA work tabletop that was a bit dinged up and marked down to $2.99. The only problem was it was 1″ too wide for the area. I bought it anyway and went home to bat my eyelashes at Mr. Decor and his table saw.
closet transformation

I covered the black surface with some heavy duty wrapping paper. The beauty is that I can always recover the surface whenever it gets a bit grungy or I decide to change the color palette. The fun really began when I started to decorate the closet.

closet transformation

Sewing Station

On the right-hand side of the closet, I set up my sewing station.

closet transformation

I love open shelving and clear containers. It allows me to find what I need very quickly.

closet transformation

I repurposed some existing storage boxes to hold my other assorted bits and bobs of pure bliss. There is a hope to make some cuter tags in the future, but these work for now.

closet transformation

Mr. Decor had made three shelves for one wall in the bedroom but we decided that two really looked the best. Never one to waste anything I had him install the remaining shelf in the closet.

closet transformation

We purchased simple (very inexpensive) pine boards at Home Depot and Mr. Handy Dandy Decor cut them to my specifications.

closet transformation

I found decorative brackets and molding at Lowes. He attached the molding to the edge of the shelves with wood glue and finish nails.

closet transformation

On the left side of the closet, I left an open space to work on scrapbooking, jewelry making or other creative endeavors.

closet transformation

A french memo board I had was ivory in color and really didn’t work with the crisp white palette so I just covered it with my corsage creations.

closet transformation

I placed a lazy susan in the center of the work table for easier access. It had just been sitting in the garage but now holds a few of my favorite things.

closet transformation

Our only expenses for this $15 space were the sink bases, tabletop and wrapping paper to cover the work surface. Everything else we had on hand. The transformation has worked out well for me. Hopefully, it will inspire others to carve out a creative space in an unexpected place.

I am painting the fabric on an old flame stitch patterned chair that was a horrid icky mauve, blue and pale yellow color! I will let you know when I am done so you can see it and give me your stamp of approval 🙂 It's a real challenge!

I love your new space you created for all your supplies.

No! I am still working on my son's bedroom. He looks after his dad. My husband and he just love to spend money, the more the better, I would almost say! Everything has to be new! I just love 2nd hand or antiques, but they just don't. Now I have to say that my husband has worked very hard to come from a son of a single parent who was living on welfare to where he is now, a director of one of the major IT companies of Europe.

Very nicely done. I am doing everything for pennies these days. And, thankfully, the blogging world provides so much inspiration and support. There are so many details in your redo that are wonderful. I am particularly happy to see your use of glass jars. I have been saving every glass jar for a couple of years now to fill with trims and pieces for sale in my business. However, I will also use them to sort my own little collection of craft items, too. Hi Laura,

Well, here I am impressed on two levels. The first that your closet holds so many things without looking like it is stuffed! Then, doing it all for so little investment is amazing. It helps to have a gentleman like your Mr. Decor to help out. I wouldn't have shelves if it wasn't for my handyman – who also mows the lawn and well, you get the idea.
Sometimes it seems like I don't hear of many people sewing anymore but then I drop into blogland and find all kinds of people and their sewing machines and materials! Yea!

Thank you for letting us see your special space!

    Hi Laura;
You did a great job on putting your space together, looks fabulous! I have a girlfriend that did that to one of her closets; she actually lined the inside with wallpaper. I just loved it. I also love that you did everything at such a bargain!
By the way, I voted for you.

Amazing you did this for so little cash out of your pocket!!!! LOVE IT! And it looks great & functional. The best part is being able to shut the doors to hide it if needed. That is how mine got to be a mess! I am so glad that it is clean now & I plan to keep it that way. One question for you… how do you keep the paper down on your work surface? Tape? Next year when I tear the wallpaper off & repaint my counters won't match the color scheme so I was thinking your idea of covering them might work. Have a great week. Charlene

Thats such a lovley space to create in, its nice to see how you used things you already had at hand (love reusing things, antique, hand-me-down or great finds) its all about what you put your mind in too. The threads in jars is a great idea, keeps them dust free. Glad I got to see it : )

What you and Mr. Decor did was the perfect solution. Everything has it's place and can be seen with no effort. I would love to visit and go thru all the pretty containers and jars. Thankyou so much for sharing with us, it's magical. Char
