The ORC Week 5 The Showstopping Element and Little Disasters

Here is The ORC Week 5 The Showstopping Element and Little Disasters. When decorating any room there should be one element that elicits conversation. Five weeks ago when I revealed the design board for our new family room there was a tie for that coveted position between the blue leather sofa and a rug I had yet to find.

The ORC Week 5 The Showstopping Element and Little Disasters

Last Friday I drove over to Highland Park area of Dallas #swanky. I had gone online to Estatesales.org and had spied a few rugs at two different sales that I thought might work.

The rug needed to be large, 10’ x 14’. It required a color palette of navy and red. An antique rug was preferable to give the room a bit of history.

I soon as I spied this beauty in person I knew it was THE rug. But it was priced at twice my budget (which wasn’t very big).

Is It The One?

I texted a photo to Mr. Décor and he agreed that it was a good rug. There were signs at the sale that said bids were being accepted on larger items. So I placed a bid, said a little prayer and drove away leaving this perfect rug behind.

I received a call from the organizer shortly before the sale was set to close. The rug had not sold and my bid had been accepted! I wasted no time in bringing this beauty home. The rug is unusual in that the border has a Persian influence but the center is somewhat French Aubusson/Savonnerie in feel. Although my hunch is that it is English based on the color palette. It is a wool-cotton blend that is in exquisite shape for its age. As this was a living estate sale I left my name and phone number for the previous owner, inquiring about the history of the rug, but I have not heard from her which is absolutely her right.

Any rug aficionados out there willing to share their thoughts?

Work and ReWork

After a week in which the painters I hired to assist us ended up ripping off large sections of the wallpaper I myself had just freshly painted, provided us with a now nonworking overhead light fixture (I suspect they didn’t wrap it well before spraying), sloppy ceilings as well as half painted trim and cabinets …

…coupled with the million moving boxes I am STILL in the midst of unpacking, I needed a win.

This rug, my friends, was a REALLY good win. It is also dachshund approved. 🙂

Family Room Decor To Adore

Next week is set as the reveal day. I still need to fill the shelves with interesting artifacts, ask Mr. Décor to fix the lighting, replace the rotted, wooden back door, hang the drapery hardware and artwork. It’s definitely crunch time!

Loving the carpet! What a beauty. It must have been hard to walk away from an item like that, especially not knowing if you may or may not ever see it again. But so lucky to be the winner of the bidding! It will be an heirloom to follow you and your family for many happy years. No body is ever going to be that happy to win the bidding on a piece of second hand click floor or want it passed down to their heirs. Enjoy and amaze your guests!
Can't wait to see the results of all your hard work! 🙂

That rug is beautiful! So glad you placed a bid and got it! Sounds like a nightmare with the painters, sorry that you are dealing with that stress. Hopefully it will all come together with no more bumps in the road!

Great find on the rug! Your room is really coming together and I can't wait to see the reveal! It would be hard for me to exercise self control at an estate sale in Highland Park since all of the homes there are swoon worthy! So happy things worked out in your favor!

That was a great find! Glad you found something that made you happy and fit your needs so well. Sounds like your painters are or were leaving a bit to be desired- I hope things have worked out in the department. Looking forward to your reveal next week. Take it easy on yourself- as my Dad used to always say “Rome wasn't built in a day!”

It is an absolutely fabulous rug. I cannot find a rug for the life of me and I have been looking for over a year. I found something temporary, but not “it”. Lucky girl!
