Recently I had a chance to visit Avonlea Village on Prince Edward Island. Given that it was late in the season only the gift shop and Turkey Tavern were open. But walking the empty streets had a charm all its own.

Avonlea Village on Prince Edward Island
Fans of Anne of Green Gables, and other charming novels written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, may know that Avonlea was the fictitious name that the author gave to the village located near the Cuthbert’s home. It was inspired by the real life town of Cavendish, and a few others, that are located on Prince Edward Island.

You also see the village quite a bit in the Road To Avonlea television series.

This charming destination features beautiful shops and gorgeous gardens.

There are also some wonderful historical buildings to include the the 1906 Minister’s Residence and the original Belmont Schoolhouse that Montgomery taught in.

You can also see the 1872 Historic Long River Church that Montgomery attended.

The village is open seasonally from June to September. As we had arrived in mid October we had the village to ourselves which was ever so poetically splendid.

I dreamed of setting up a haberdashery and dressmaking shop here.

The Anne of Green Gables bookshop was still open for business.
I wish the chocolate shop had been open.
Turkey Tavern
The Turkey Tavern was also still open and every seat in the place was filled on Sunday afternoon. It was set to close the next week, after Canadian Thanksgiving, for the season.

They are famous for their turkey dinners but have a variety of fare to suit all dietary needs.

It was fun to see the village during it’s slow autumn season. The Avonlea apples were so bountiful on the trees!
I look forward to returning next August for a visit during Anne’s Tour of Dreams.

“I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.” ~ Anne of Green Gables

I think I would dearly love this. The original AGG series on PBS remains one of my all-time favorites!
