The Montgomery Inn on Prince Edward Island is an absolute gem with it’s spectacular views of the countryside. This charming home once belonged to Senator Donald Montgomery, the paternal grandfather of L.M. Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables and several other books. It is the only historically significant home on the island where you can stay and look out the windows and see the Lake of Shining Waters~ a name given to Campbell’s Pond by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
This post is the first in a series about the wonders to experience walking in the land of Anne.

The Montgomery Inn at Ingleside
Lucy Maud Montgomery often visited this beautiful farmhouse which was built in 1877.

The exterior of the home remains very similar in appearance today.

Thankfully, the rolling farmland and views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence also remain very close to what they were in Maud’s time.
Visiting in mid October the land was awash in a riot of golds, oranges and reds. It is easy to see how this charming countryside home inspired the fictional novels of Ingleside~ the cherished residence of Gilbert, Anne and their children.

From the front lawn you can view the Green Gables museum and a small section of Campbell’s Pond more famously known as the Lake of Shining Waters.

The back views are also quite expansive.

When gazing upon the lake, one can be truly inspired in every sense of the word.

It is also easy to envision Maud walking through the home’s gracious rooms. It is said she hosted tea parties within the bay windows and out on the veranda.

One wonders if she perhaps hopped, skipped or jumped down the stairs with its beautiful banister.
The Downstairs Rooms
The home was purchased by Dennis and Lauralee Harding in 2025. Lauralee is a true kindred spirit of the author and of the extended family today. The Hardings have taken great care in respecting the history of the home. Lauralee continues to hunt for antique treasures to bring back to the rooms once more.
To the right of the entrance is the formal parlor which contains the original fireplace mantel and an organ that has been in the family for well over a century.
The bookcase was brought over from Scotland when the Montgomery family immigrated to Prince Edward Island.
This doorway leads into the formal dining room.
The antique farm table can seat six. There are also two smaller tables that are perfect for puzzles, crafts and more.
The Senator’s Suite
Also downstairs is the spacious Senator’s Suite.
Upstairs At The Inn
There are six more bedrooms upstairs.
The Ingleside Suite has views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The Avonlea Suite has a beautiful view of the lake.
Another room with a view of the lake is the Lucy Maud Suite.
The Blue Moon Suite is full of charm!
The Anne Room is one of my favorites as Lauralee has decorated it to closely match Anne Shirley’s bedroom in the 1985 series.
The Rilla Room is so soothing in various shades of green.
Anne’s Tour of Dreams
The Montgomery Inn at Ingleside is just 45 minutes from the island’s capital, Charlottetown. It is also very close to many of the other Anne-related sites.
The Green Gables museum, which Maud referred to the home as “The Wonder Castle of my Childhood“ is just across the road. It was originally owned by Maud’s beloved Aunt Annie (her mother Clara’s sister) and Uncle John Campbell. They lived there with Maud’s four merry Campbell cousins. It continues to be run by the Campbell family and will be featured in an upcoming post.

The Montgomery Inn at Ingleside is also quite close to many beautiful beaches, charming fishing villages and fabulous lighthouses.

Thanks for sharing! My husband and I visited PEI about 10 years ago and loved it. We also visited the museum while there. I dont recall the Inn but will need to look it up for a future trip to the island. Again, thanks for sharing.
Blessings, Candy
